Negative pregnancy test but lots of symptoms?

Asked by jessuhcuh (3points) January 12th, 2011

Okay so I am 20 years old. My fiance and I have been together for a little over 2 years, and have had unprotected sex for the last year and a half. I say unprotected- I am on birth control, but I am very forgetful and always forget to take it on time. We are not scared of me getting pregnant, so if I am that would be wonderful! However, I generally have regular periods- I start the 3rd Thursday of every month. This month, I started 2 weeks early- it was very light spotting and lasted about a day. Since then I have taken 4 pregnancy tests and they all come up negative. I have many symptoms though, such as nausea, diarrea, tight stomach, fatigue, lower back pain, and breast pain. I am supposed to start my period tomorrow and have not shown any signs of my normal PMS, but since it was 2 weeks early I am not sure whether to expect it or not. I am a little overweight- not unhealthy, but enough that I think it might affect the way a pregnancy test reads the HCG levels in my body. Has anyone had a similar experience and do you have any suggestions? Like I said, we’re totally ready and it would be a blessing to have one- so either way it’s fine with us!

Yes, it is possible to have a false negative. You can wait a week and take another one but if you can, go take a blood test – it’s much better.

It could also be something else gynecological – go see your OBGYN.

OK—just my humble opinion:
The symptoms you’re listing are all the exact symptoms I experience when I’m about to have my period.
Breakthrough bleeding (the one day of spotting you had 2 weeks early) is not unusual, especially not for women on oral contraceptives.

FWIW, each time I was pregnant (3 times) I did not have symptoms of pregnancy until several weeks into the pregnancy. Not just mere days or a couple of weeks after conception.

Also, the timing at which you take your pill each day is honestly not important to the pill’s effectiveness. Doctors advise this only to get you to make it a good habit / part of your daily routine. The reality is that the effects of the pill are cumulative – and take some women who are trying to conceive MONTHS to get “out of their system”.

If it were me, I’d give it a few more days before spending more money on pregnancy tests. (They are kinda expensive!)

@Geeky Mama, I realize they are some of the same symptoms. But they are not regular for my period. I also am on the NUVAring, not the BC pill. I left it out too long and have to wait until my next “in” day to put one back in. We had sex at the end of December and early January by pull-out method. But yeah, I’ll take another in a few days! :)

Ohhhhh. Sorry – please disregard! I know nothing about NUVARing. ;)

Would your hormones have had time to change yet?!

You are probably not pregnant from what you are describing.

To be sure, see a doctor and have a more conclusive test.

I’m a bit confused by your dates. If you normally start the third Thursday of each month, you wouldn’t be due until next week on the 20th. When you say your period started 2 weeks early, are you talking about this month, meaning you had a period last week or are you talking about in back in the beginning of December?

If you are talking about this month, it could have been implantation bleeding that you experienced at the beginning of the month and not a period. If that’s the case, it could still be too early for you to have a positive on a pregnancy test. Before you put in your next NuvaRing, you need to test again to be sure. If you take a home pregnancy test and it still comes up negative, you may want to ask your doctor for a blood test to be sure before starting back on the NuvaRing.

@Seaofclouds, thanks for correcting this actually. You are correct and I am a week ahead, it is the 20th that I am supposed to start. And then by that case, I would have started 3 weeks early- So it was like period.period. right behind each other. I will test again if I don’t start normally on the 20th. I don’t know where that week went to. :)
