Pretty much nothing. I might take a break if things got too intense, but I don’t think I’d ever be so upset by anything that happened here that I’d quit over it.

Dog's avatar

I have taken breaks here and there for various reasons. But I can’t see leaving over a question.

Maybe if I was to be hired into a killer commission of museum quality. I might disable temporarily to focus on the work.

- It becomes a pay site, and all members have to start paying a monthly fee.

- It gets taken over by a large company who does away with the moderators, and instead, replaces them with an automated moderation system.

- Moderation takes a bad turn, the majority of questions and answers begin to be removed for strange and petty reasons.

- The site hits bad times, due to a lack of cash, the site is offline most of the time, and when it does work, its very slow and full of bugs.

- The site somehow becomes impossible to use or otherwise becomes unenjoyable.

I tried to think of 5 possible reasons, it was not easy, and im sure most would agree they are all extreme reasons. So it’s quite unlikely.

I have already “quit” once in the past when I was very busy. As fluther falls under my entertainment category, it is automatically on the list of sites I won’t visit should I become very busy. Looking at how my life works at the moment, that means you can expect to see me here about 8 to 10 months of the year give or take.

If my friends here came less and less and disappeared entirely, if Fluther seemed to be fading, I would probably drift away too. A few people who left Fluther decisively [not always by their own choice] took some of Fluther’s fun with them, but many friendly funny folk still remain.

If I were Materialistic…...........

I might leave it for not paying me against my valuable answers and my precious time…

BTW should Fluther pay us ?

Arisztid's avatar

Delete my account, no, walk away… yes. As it stands this is the third or fourth question I have answered in 3 months.

I see no reason to delete my account because it would do no good. The only thing that would vanish would be the access to my information. Questions and answers are still there.

Not_the_CIA's avatar

I have deleted a few times. Once it was because I needed more free time.

I pretty much achieved my goal. All the people I care about spout shit in the swamp I was drunk and created. (with some help from wonderful people:-)

Fluther could die in a week and I wouldn’t care. We have a new clubhouse.

YARNLADY's avatar

If they did away with moderators. If the questions all turned into boyfriend problems and games. If the layout was changed to make advertisements in between every answer. If General disappeared and only social was left.

Cruiser's avatar

2 reasons….if they ever pull an A/B makeover or Lucille leaves.

Not_the_CIA's avatar

Fluther has been so littered with ads I can’t recommend it to friends for a long time. This is what it looks like if you are not logged in.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Not_the_CIA I have that stuff turned off. I never see ads. Using Firefox 3.6.13, pop ups disabled.

I’d delete my account if there was some massive security leak. Like if I accidentally said my name was Herbe… [Redacted by the CIA]

Apparently BoBo1946 found a reason. WTH! :(

wilma's avatar

I don’t know what happened to BoBo, but I’m sad about his leaving

marinelife's avatar

@wilma He left because of a fight in a thread yesterday. He said if he forgot to say goodbye to someone that he loves everyone.

Jude's avatar

There’s nothing.

marinelife's avatar

Probably nothing, but @poisonedantidote‘s depressing list of possible futures might cause me to if some of them came to pass.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I’d say only if the things @poisonedantidote wrote came up, then I’d probably leave. Other than that, I can’t really think of anything else that would make me consider leaving Fluther for good.

ucme's avatar

Maybe i’d consider it if say, my computer exploded in a haze of flame….......Arrrrgh!! By the way, what the fuck did BoBo leave for? I read a pm from him this morning saying take care & whoosh his account has gone!

TexasDude's avatar

If the levels of bickering bitchitude got so high as to jeopardize my cardiovascular health, then I’d maybe consider it, but I’m not one to puss out on things, so I probably wouldn’t after all.

gailcalled's avatar

Can anyone link to the thread that left @Bobo1946 so unhqppy?

Dog's avatar

Bobo is still here everyone :)

Sure tempers are raised once in a while but what is awesome is that sometimes I have seen those who tangle horns in debate actually become good friends afterwards.

marinelife's avatar

@Dog He did just leave me a message, but I tried to PM him back and his account was gone. I wanted real world contact info for him.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

There are a handful of people here that I truly adore, and if all of them left, I would too.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

If a whole bunch of people became unbearable together.

erichw1504's avatar

You’d have to pry my Fluther account from my cold, dead hands.

gailcalled's avatar

@Seaofclouds: Thank you. I am always surprised at what triggers the infantile outbursts. It is unpredictable. Such a lot of wasted energy that could be used more profitably elsewhere, like shoveling my path or cutting Milo’s nails.

I am here for the duration also, in spite of this, which makes my teeth hurt.

“Looks like Newuser hasn’t added any topics to their profile yet”

Eggie's avatar

If the moderations does not respect other people or becomes biased…this goes for the answers too.

Dog's avatar

@marinelife I see. But I am still confident he will return since he is part of the collective family. :)

downtide's avatar

If it ceased to be moderated as well as it is now – in other words if the moderation got too strict, or too lax – then I would leave.

If it got filled up with a mass of people posting idiotic questions like they do on Yahoo Answers (which of course cannot happen at present because of the way Fluther is moderated.

rangerr's avatar

I’ve deleted my account multiple times.
Mostly because I get drunk and angry.. Luckily, Auggie lets me come back.

iamthemob's avatar

If there were no moderation.

WTF about Bobo. That’s a real loss, as far as I’m concerned. He was an example of someone who generally had totally different perspectives than I did, but generally wasn’t about trying to force his perspective as the one that was right.

A rare trait, something I have yet to master, and difficult to maintain particularly when he had views that were contrary to the majority on here. I saw the thread where that went down. We should all look at that as a lesson of how not to freak out. He wanted to defend himself, and he got tired. I would too.

bkcunningham's avatar

As a fairly new poster to the site, I’ll give my views, with trepidation. I found the site by accident and logged in and read and read and read before I ever offered a comment. The discussions reminded me of myself and my friends in my college days, back when I was younger. I was interested and excited to get a glimpse into a different perspective of the world and the issues facing different people.

The more I’ve read and the more “conversations and exchanges” I’ve seen, the more my enthusiam declines. I will say I am saddened at the lack of respect for different views and the intolerance and narcissistic attitudes of some posters. I really thought I’d see more hope, and longing to learn and I don’t know. Have I become my parents? Your music is too loud sorta thing?

I don’t know. It is just my honest opinion. Not everyone, mind you. But the majority and it seems like a pack mentality. Even with the BoBo incident…indescribable viewing it through my eyes. I whispered something outloud to him in the post trying to shield him and ease the tension and the whole time I kept thinking, “They are going to attack you any minute. This is getting out of hand.”

I’m still new enough here I just hang on hoping and holding my breath thinking perhaps I have seen people at their worst and out of sorts because of the holidays.

TexasDude's avatar

@bkcunningham, you’re a bad person and you should feel bad!

Just kidding. I like you.

Cruiser's avatar

It is this “just kiddin I am a mod and you are not” mentality that has recently created a highway length of white crosses with wreathes of Jellies who bore the brunt of a final straw and said fuck it all not worth the grief, “I am out of here”...“See Ya!”....

R.I.P. Phillis, dpworking, Zen and his many incarnations, Mando Mike, Gail, Trillian, BoBo 1946 to name a very few.

If I left a name out, I apologize and please feel free to etch their name here. Granted we all have lives outside of the pond here and at at times we may burst into flames over issues, but Fluther is not a bed of roses…it is what it is and at time takes a pretty thick skin to endure. Safe to say mine is thicker than yours!! ;))

Dog's avatar

@Cruiser Huh??? Some of the users you mention are still present and moderation cannot be blamed for every user that decides to leave.

augustlan's avatar

Yes. That. ^^

gailcalled's avatar

Gail here, in the flesh. I will resist from quoting Mark Twain.

@bkcunningham: The are going to attack you at any minute.

I read through the thread and never saw any instance of a conspiratorial “they” attacking @Bobo1946. There is no offline plotting and colluding.

Someone chided @Bobo1946 for 1) repeating himself, 2) using humor in an unsuitable way and 3) not giving a link for his obvious quote.

That is not unreasonable.

Granted, it then turned into an unprofitable and repetitive argument along the lines of “No, I’m not,” “Yes, you are.”

The best defense here is “I’m sorry. You have a good point.” Or, tiptoeing away on “little cat’s feet.”

Jude's avatar

“The best defense here is “I’m sorry. You have a good point.” Or, tiptoeing away on “little cat’s feet.””

I agree.

iamthemob's avatar

@gailcalled, @Jude

I agree practically. But it’s disturbing that it should be the person who is being ganged up on (there needn’t be any offline conspiracy – instant agreement with online posts is plenty to get the “feeding frenzy going) rather than the people who are involved in the group that should check their tactics.

Anyone who is singled out is going to feel defensive. The fact that @gailcalled didn’t see any unreasonable behavior is because, to an extent I believe, she was not the target.

Simply being the only one on your side can make reasonable positions seem unreasonable.

JilltheTooth's avatar

I appreciate @gailcalled ‘s post, as I got roundly chided for a basically non-inflammatory dislike of a user’s post. I was sent snide PMs, and the whole thing escalated hugely. I have been disagreed with here, both respectfully and snidely, sent nasty PMs, and still have no desire to leave because I don’t take it personally. I might, if people I feel I am close to really banded together to slam me, but that is very rare here. I always keep in mind that questions come quickly, go quickly, and often are soon forgotten, and I can click away from anything I don’t like, and I can walk away from the computer at any time.

Jude's avatar

@iamthemob I see what you’re saying and I agree there. Tough situation to be in.

gailcalled's avatar

@iamthemob: I have been the target, from time to time; but I have enjoyed the give-and-take.

If one finds oneself “the only one on your side,” perhaps one needs to reconsider one’s position.

iamthemob's avatar

@gailcalled – No one is debating that. However, that’s not a very human reaction.

There are aspects of being the only one on your side that make many, if not most, respond irrationally. We all should know that to be true.

So I would rather put the responsibility for redirecting the argument on the party more able to do so well, and more rationally – the side with more people on it.

pearls's avatar

I think it is time to let it go and move on as was asked of Bobo. It is unfortunate that he is no longer a member of this site and I certainly hope he comes back.

cockswain's avatar

If it became a “Come to Jesus” site.

Besides that, very little. Like the great @ucme once said: “Words on a screen, baby. Words on a screen.”

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@cockswain : Hello! I haven’t seen you in ages. It’s good to see your words on a screen.

cockswain's avatar

thanks buddy. I get burned out from time to time and take a break. Got drawn back into a few political discussions in the wake of the Tucson incident.

J0E's avatar

The only thing I can think of is if maybe I felt like the information I’ve given on this site was putting me in danger, like if I had a stalker or something. I’m not that emotionally invested in the site that I would leave out of anger, or any other sort of drama. I have dozens of accounts on site across the internet that I no longer use, and I never bother to delete the accounts, I’m sure Fluther will become one of them someday.

downtide's avatar

@J0E same here. The usual reason for me leaving a site is because some new thing has distracted my attention and is eating up my time, and I’ve simply forgotten about the old ones.
