Will my body eventually become dependent on more water if I drink more?

Asked by jabag11 (676points) January 13th, 2011

I’m training myself to take in more water a day for better energy and over all health, about 2 liters a day, will doing this eventually train my body to become dependent on this amount of water?

Because I doubt I will be trying to drink this amount of water my whole life, just for now I wish to.

I….am 19….and Male. =D

No, it won’t. I am 31 and a female.

Nope. Maybe if you were 24 and female, but for a 19-year-old male it’s fine.

Seriously, though, no. I’m 30 and female.

No.
Although it is uncommon, water intoxication can be a problem. Not that 2 liters is an excessive amount of fluid, but if you are working out a lot (read: sweating) you need to be aware of how much water you’re taking in at one time. Healthy, human kidneys can filter far more than 2 liters of water in a day, but only so much at one time. If you are sweating quite a bit and drinking a lot of water in a short period of time, especially if you aren’t accustomed to taking in so much, it can flush out necessary electrolytes from your system. Nothing to panic over, just be conscious of it.

On an average day doing nothing, I consume about 3 liters through water, coffee and tea.
If Im working hard in hot weather I might consume up to 7 liters.
If Iv been drinking heavily the night before hand it might be up to 8.
Im male, 26 and weigh about 90kg.:-)

Your body is already dependent on about 2L of water a day to function at optimal level, or so I read years ago. I’ve been trying to do this all my adult life. It was easy when I smoked but I’m finding it difficult now. I just don’t think about it. In the summer it’s easy.

The most important point is that your body will let you know when you need more water. That’s what being thirsty is all about.

You can form a new (and potentially useless) habit of increased water intake. But your body will function well with just a normal intake of water. When it’s a habit, it means you will be mentally triggered to drink more than is required. It’s like a mental dependency. Kind of like getting into the habit of going to the theater more often than you used to and missing it when you cut back.

Only if you are 19 and male.

(As you remember, being 19 and male, Moliére said that a joke stopped being funny after the third repetition.)

10, m, 11 lbs, four paws and whiskers, long seductive black tail with white tie and top hat.)

I was not able to find “water” on this pager http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Substance_dependence
so the answer is no.

And I….am 30….and Male. =D

No, drinking a lot of water would not make your body dependent on having more water. If that was true, water would be considered an addictive substance. It can however, make your body used to drinking more water. If you were to go to some extremely hot place, such as a desert, you would want to drink a lot of water for a certian time before you go there. In the desert, drinking the amount of water your body feels like is enough will result in dehydration. If you are used to drinking a lot of water, it wouldn’t feel like you were overhydrating yourself when you actually need that amount of water in a desert.

You are dependent on water for life. Your body always tells you how much water it needs by making you feel thirst. I have no idea why you would drink too much water except maybe it flushes some chemicals out of your system. But no worries. You will never become any more dependent on water than you are now.
