Am I available for the American Opportunity Credit if I already have my BA?

Asked by rjb1983 (158points) January 14th, 2011

I got my BA back in 2006 but did a professional certificate program in 2010; does anyone know if I’d be eligible for the American Opportunity Credit? The way it’s phrased on the IRS website is really confusing.

The American opportunity tax credit can be claimed for expenses for the first four years of post-secondary education (per the Q&A section at the link @bkcunningham provided above).

Yes, it seems I am ineligible but am eligible for the Lifetime Learning Education credit. Who knew it’s basically $2k of free money!

@rjb1983 not to be rude, but it isn’t free. Somebody worked for it and paid it in taxes.

Thanks @bkcunningham, I think I’ll be looking into the LLE credit. :)
