Do you still rent movies?

Asked by filmfann (52515points) January 16th, 2011

10 years ago, I rented lots of movies every week. When DVD prices dropped, and renting fee’s went up, I stopped renting, and just bought whatever I wanted to watch. I occasionally get burned on movies I would never watch again (Requiem For A Dream, I’m looking at you!). My friends would swear by NetFlix. I like the price structure of NetFlix, but for me watching movies is like ordering a meal at a restaurant: sometimes I am in the mood for meat, other times I want something light. I don’t want to be saddled with a movie I eventually want to watch, when I am in the mood for something else.
Leaving the grocery store this morning, I used a Blockbuster Express machine (which is like a Red Box), and rented a recent movie for just a dollar. It got me thinking: with all the video stores closing down, how many people still rent? Do you prefer NetFlix? Do you like the satellite or cable On Demand or PayPerView? Do you just buy it?
Inquiring minds want to know!

I usually sleep during movies.XD
I am a fan of the old movies though, and do occasionally see a movie at the theatre.I recently saw the remake of True Grit.It was alright, but the original is far better.;)

i go with netflix + use a roku settop box. otherwise i might rent from amazon or hit up a redbox or blockbuster express since they are pretty ubiquitous.

I use Redbox at least twice a week.

I rented a movie last night! “Dinner for Schmucks”. While I have netflix, this was from the local remaining video store which has a great inventory of old classic and foreign films. Renting from the store let my kids and I spontaneously choose something we all wanted to see.

Mostly I borrow from the library. If my local library did not have a big collection, or I were more into recent releases, I would use Netflix. Sometimes I rent from the iTunes store.

I rent movies when I need to catch up on sleep.

I still use Netflix, getting one movie at a time mailed to the house. Even though we’ve been using it for about 5 years, it’s still like getting a little surprise every time it comes. I usually have about 30 movies in my queue (sp?) so I forget what I’ve put in there. I don’t like to buy movies. Once I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it. With one little exception. I do buy movies with Alan Rickman. Can’t get enough of him ;-)

Not since I was knee high to a grasshopper….that’s really really small.

I never rent, but I use Netflix. I almost exclusively use the Instant Watch feature. I hate waiting 2 days for a DVD to come (and then 2 more days for it to return to the factory before I can wait another 2 days to get the next DVD). With Instant Watch, streaming it online, there’s no worry of getting “saddled” with one movie when I want another. I frequently start a movie, get bored 20 minutes in, and start another one.

I haven’t rented a movie through Blockbuster (etc) since.. before 2004.

My rural community had one local video store that folded a few years ago. Then Blockbuster & Hollywood video in the 2 nearby adjacent middle sized cities went under so I have been buying CD’s like crazy for a year or so now.

I recycle all my movies at a Dimple records about 30 minutes from me and come home with tons of new fare and I am happy with that. I too am not a Netflix type as I don’t want a timeline on my viewing or having something around that is not appealing in the moment.

I just bought the ‘Dexter’ seasons and some documentary type flicks.

Sometimes I only want to watch something for an hour or so, not commit to an entire movie.

Works for me.

I can’t remember the last time I rented a movie.

I rent them—from Blockbuster Express a lot of the time.

BE seemed cool enough, but they are only going to have the recent titles, and not the obscure independant films or cult movies I love.

I rarely rent, as I find it to be a bit pricey. Like @jaytkay, I borrow movies from the library. My current library has the most amazing DVD section, even a whole bunch of gay movies. I love the Bay Area.

I just got a Netflix trial, so I’ve been checking that out, the streaming via my Wii.. when I have a job, I think I may subscribe, at least to the streaming version. It’s $7.99 and I’ve seriously been impressed at the number of movies available to stream. I also love that Netflix learns what you like, so you get recommendations, as well.

Kinda cracks me up, the categories that have come up based on what I’ve rated and watched.. ‘Movies with a Strong Female Lead’, ‘Social and Cultural Documentaries’, ‘Romantic and Historical Dramas’, etc.. all spot on. I think I spend almost as much time adding new movies to my queue as I do actually watching them.

You might like Facets.

I rent movies from a machine that looks a bit like an ATM. It charges by the minute, so if I rent a movie and take it back a couple of hours later, it does not even cost me 50 cents. However, I would not use it as much if it was not on the corner of my street.

I love the watch instantly feature of Netflix. I don’t use the actual mail rental much at all, but I do use the other feature all the time.

I fancied Timecrimes the other day so I just bought it from Amazon. Great film. I never rent movies and rarely buy.

Yup. My friends and I still go to Blockbuster every now and then when we feel like watching a movie that’s not in theaters. I also sometimes rent a movie on iTunes and then hook my computer up to the TV.

Streaming normally either off of Stagevu, or another site provided by Zmovie

Don’t tell anyone because I might go to jail for this but I rent 3 at a time during the week for 10 bucks (how does that compare to prices elsewhere???) I put them onto my laptop and then watch when I feel like it. If it is a really good movie that I want to watch again, I will save onto an external hard drive until I want to watch it again.

My mum and I have this thing with Blockbuster where we set up a queue of movies online, they come in the mail, and we get a new one when we return the one we just watched to the store, or mail it back. It’s pretty cheap too.

We use Netflix, but mainly for kids’ movies, TV series, and the “watch now” option with the Wii. We have the cheapest “one DVD at a time” option with them. Right now I am watching season 1 of Glee through Netflix and love it! I’ve used the Red Box a couple of times, and have been to an actual Blockbuster store once in the past eight years. Spur of the moment movie rental. We also rent movies with the On Demand feature.

My husband used to buy every movie he wanted to see when it came out on DVD, but after a few too many duds he finally stopped!

Edited to say: The reason I went to Blockbuster was because I really, really wanted to watch The Goonies with my kids. I couldn’t get it On Demand or instantly with the Wii. I didn’t want to wait for a Netflix DVD in the mail. Blockbuster had it, and it made my day! At the time, I thought it would be great to take the kids there again to rent games, but of course we haven’t done that.

Netflix – 3 at a time plan plus streaming. My husband says he likes having the 3 at a time so he can decide at any given time which he wants to watch.

I still do the old fashioned physical movie renting that I did with my parents back when VHS was all the rage. I like going out to rent movies, and I support the smaller video rental places. They usually have a wider range of stuff than the big places surprisingly, it’s just that if you want a new release, they don’t have as many copies. (But i got lucky for Machete, only one copy left out of like ten of them…MINE!)
But yeah, I rent movies all the time, and it doesn’t cost that much. Kinda pisses me off at times because some people don’t take care of what they rent so I end up getting stuck with some DVD that freezes or skips.

faye's avatar

We still have lots of video stores, Netflix in Canada doesn’t have a great selection, and it’s not too expensive to rent.

I must be the only one here who rents movies off the satelite and then tape lol record them to the DVR. Geez I was born in the 70’s I’M NOT THAT OLD!!

Jeruba's avatar

Sure do. I am a happy long-term Netflix customer. We have 4 at a time; used to be 5 until older son left.

When I want something right now, tonight, that I couldn’t plan ahead on by 2 or 3 days, I use the instant viewing feature. There’s so many more movies available now for immediate play (including quite a few that are also pending in my rental queue) that I can always find something of interest.

incendiary_dan's avatar

I get movies from the library. I don’t understand why more people don’t.

cookieman's avatar

We digitally rent from either Apple TV or Verizon’s OnDemand. Maybe once or twice a month.

We DVR a bunch of TV shows, so that fills up most of our viewing time.

I haven’t been in an actual video store in well over ten years. That being said, I go to an actual movie theater maybe once a year.

Mat74UK's avatar

I have just started digitally renting films on my PS3!

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

When Netflix is too slow, and the movie won’t be out soon, I go to Blockbuster
