Read about this on Fluther a few months ago and want to read this book! It’s about how in the future, instead of credit scores or salaries, etc. everyone receives a number known as “Wh___” (_Whiffle? Whippie? Whoopie?... I’m dying here!) and such number is increased or decreased through good or bad deeds. The novel is something like ____ in the ___ of ____ and ____ (like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil). Please help! Thanks.

It’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow.
The currency is called “Whuffie” and is based on reputation- basically how much people like you on the Internet.
Read it for free here and buy it later. Doctorow’s marketing strategy is essentially to give his work away for free in hopes that people will pay him for being awesome. It seems to be working.
Personally, I think Cory is overrated. I read “down and out” and frankly, I had to make myself read it. I think I liked one of his earlier novels, but since then… not so much.
what’s his style like? I don’t want to bother if he sucks, although I do follow him on the Twitter™ .

The easiest way to answer that question is for you to go to his website, craphound.com, and to read some of his work for yourself. It’s free, you’ve got nothing to lose.
Down and Out is pretty long, it’s a full novel. You might want to pick a short story instead. When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth is one I like, or there’s one called Craphound too that is nice IMO. Maybe others can chime in with suggestions.
