Are pigs the only animals that bacon can be harvested from?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) January 20th, 2011

#1. Turkey Bacon, is not “bacon”.

Bacon- n. a cut of a pigs belly muscle, primarily, here in the US.

So, is there Bovine Bacon?

Yes, the beef brisket can be cut, salted and smoked just like bacon.

I always associated bacon with pork so I don’t know, They can make other meats simular to bacon but it is not true bacon. I ate turkey bacon this morning and I wasn’t too thrilled. I prefer pork bacon.

I love bacon, but can’t stomach breakfast sausage. Turkey bacon just isn’t the same.

Bacon, by definition, is salted and smoked meat from the back, belly, sides or loin of a pig, I believe. With the pig being the operative term there. You can cure other animal flesh in the same way that bacon is prepared and processed but it doesn’t make it bacon. I believe that would just make it “bacon-like.”

@YARNLADY And I was being kind when I used the term “bacon-like.” As an on again off again vegetarian, or non-pork or non-red meat eating not quite a vegetarian but fish or fowl eater I can assure everyone that if it doesn’t come from a pig it’s not bacon; it’s “facon.”
