Back when AOL was dial-up, why was such a huge deal made about signing out (and not X'ing out)?

Asked by buckyboy28 (4961points) January 20th, 2011

I remember it always being stressed to sign out, and not X out of AOL, but I also remember X’ing out on occasion, and having no problems. The phone line would disconnect, my account would be logged out, and all would be right in the world.

It could depend on the computer. When I X out of a program on my computer the application may still be open.

If you didn’t sign out and the account, for some reason, didn’t disconnect your bill would’ve gone up and you would have had no right to complain, because you were warned.
