What mishaps have you encountered while texting?

Asked by AmWiser (14947points) January 20th, 2011

This young lady fell into a fountain at the mall while texting. Fortunately, she was probably more embarrassed than hurt, not to mention, her purchases may have been ruined, her phone destroyed, and she was soaking wet (hope it’s not cold where she lives).

I’m not sorry that I’m getting a chuckle at someone else’s mishap, because if it had happened to me, I would laugh at myself.

Some questions for you:
1— have you encountered any mishaps while texting?
2— what are your thoughts on the mall fall mishap? Funny: yes. no?
3— if it happened to you, would you think it was funny?

No mishaps, but, my girlfriend was driving down I-94 on her way to Detroit and “Snookie” (same “poof” hair and fake tan) was driving in the passing lane at 35!!! The speed limit was 70. People were honking and screaming at her, but, she did nothing. No speeding up. Just kept talking on the phone.

I almost got broadsided by a truck. I was texting while driving, which I usually don’t do, and making a left turn through an intersection with a one-way stop sign. The driver was pissed, as his horn blared for almost 20 seconds straight. I made it through ok, and no accident was caused, but it makes me think twice about texting while driving, or playing with any other electronic device for that matter.

About the fall, when misfortune falls upon others it is often seen as funny and comical. If it happened to me I would not be laughing though (that day, maybe a couple of weeks after I would).

I’ve only seen mishaps, or rather near-mishaps. Driving texters, their cars weaving across lanes; pedestrian texters, walking like zombies across the street or a parking lot, oblivious to oncoming traffic; and office texters, totally in their own world in meetings and walking down the hall.
I, myself, have been guilty of all three on occasion.

I see cars swerving all over the road these days because they are texting. Just waiting for a car to take me out.

@Jude I know, I see it all the time. They just don’t give a damn.
@glenjamin I found the video funny because it was after the fact. If I had been there she would have had my help and utmost sympathy.

I don’t text and drive anymore unless I’m in traffic or at a stop light because I almost hit the barrier while on the highway.

I’ve tripped over stuff while texting..but have yet to fall :D I’m slick….like a fox…but I would never text while driving or in big crowds…People are so nosey…I’ve caught random strangers hovering over my phone a couple times while I text and walk in big crowds, Like amusement parks…I’d see there eyes looking down on my phone….Then they look away after I write something like ”..and this creepy person is reading my text.”

I heard once of a girl who was tweeting while walking and walked straight into an open manhole!
Maybe it makes me a terrible person, but I find these stories really funny…!

Texting, while driving, is a law violation in my state.

The only problem with enforcement of the law is this:

How do you determine if a person is texting or just making a phone call, while driving? hard law to enforce.

this woman you speak of even got a lawyer to help her fight the point that security camera operators should have been more sensitive rather than put it on youtube. in that respect, she may have a case. she was even on national news to say she was violated.

what the texter must realize first, though, is common sense will tell you not to walk, drive or do anything else that needs attention “before” texting.

I was almost hit by a bicyclist because I was walking and texting.

@charliecompany34 I think she is just soooo embarrassed about being caught on tape, she wants to sue. Good luck with that one!

The only trouble I’ve got into because of texting was through the predictive feature. I’d been out all night at a club and had gone on to an after-party at a friend’s house, and was texting my (now ex) wife to let her know where I was. Instead of texting “I’ve gone to Jenny’s and won’t be home until later” I actually sent “I’ve gone to Jenny’s and won’t be good until later”. Given that Jenny was drop-dead gorgeous and my wife was a little insecure, she wasn’t amused.

@john65pennington Using a mobile phone for any purpose whilst driving, except with a hands free kit, is illegal here in the UK. You get a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence (12 points within 3 years leads to a 6 month ban).
