Is it unhealthy to breastfeed if you're obese?
If you are morbidly obese I mean. I was watching “Precious” and she was breastfeeding her baby so I got curious.

Why would obesity have anything to do with it?
I don’t see why it would be unhealthy. However, I know that it is harder to breastfeed for obese people, I’ve read several studies looking at different reasons but they all pointed to decreased lactation and/or difficulty with latching for the babies.
The more the merrier. obesity should have nothing to do with breasfeeding.
If a morbidly obese woman survived pregnancy and childbirth to deliver a healthy, living newborn, if that didn’t kill her, then they are both pretty much home free as far as breastfeeding is concerned I would think.
The milk isn’t higher fat coming from a fat person if that’s what you’re thinking.
Breastfeeding uses over 2500 calories a day. That ought to be GOOD for obese women – at least to reduce their weight.
As RocketGuy said, breastfeeding can actually help people to lose weight so that can only be a positive.
The only thing that would make breastfeeding unhealthy is if the mother was ingesting drugs or alcohol or harmful prescriptions that will pass through the breast milk.
Hm, okay. I didn’t mean to offend anyone on here.
Hi Chelle
Why would anyone be offended? I am not offended in the slightest. I think it was a good question.
