How long are bc pills good for?

Asked by janedoe (21points) January 22nd, 2011

Awhile ago I got my prescription filled but never started taking them. Would they still be okay to start taking now? I am currently unemployed and don’t have any insurance. BC is expensive. Obviously I don’t want to take something that is not effective. Would you still take them or would you get a new prescription filled? I am unsure of the exact amount of time I have had them.

you should be able to find out from the pharmacy where you got them. and if you need affordable bc pills, check with Planned Parenthood for help.

You’d be better off going to your local Health Department, Planned parenthoods are generally Catholic owned and don’t believe in birth control, I know Planned Parenthood wouldn’t give them to me and numerous of my friends. But maybe that was just in the county that I was in that they were Catholic owned.

The pills should be good until the expiration date on the package.

@JustJessica don’t know where you got that idea, Planned Parenthood is NOT at all involved with the Catholic Church. they distribute condoms, offer counseling on birth control, provide gynecological exams, and can help, depending on location, with getting an abortion.

They won’t go “bad” in the sense that they could hurt you. Medicine doesn’t do that. BUT, when they reach a half life point they will lose some effectiveness. I would think they would have a take by date on the packaging somewhere.

@JustJessica It sounds like you have an experience with one of the FAKE planned parenthoods that churches and religious groups start up to coerce women into keeping unwanted pregnancies and not taking/using BC. There’s one by a planned parenthood here in columbus called like “parenthood planning.” Literally like 2 buildings down the street with the same color signs and crap. The REAL Planned Parenthood most definitely will give BC of various types.

@tedd You must be right, because I walked out the door in shock that they wouldn’t give BC pills!

They should have an expiry date somewhere on the package; mine do, anyway. But like others suggested, check out Planned Parenthood or your local health department. I know you can get pills there for pretty cheap – when I was in high school I used to get them for $5 a month.
