On the Kiplinger cost of living comparison, New York is the most expensive and is ranked 400. Boston comes in at 129 and Philly at 103. In general, Southern cities have a lower cost of living than Northern ones, but of the Northern biggest cities, Philadelphia has the lowest cost of living.
It’s an amazing city. It has all the amenities of a city and the feel of a small town. But I didn’t tell you that. Anyone who says I did is itching for an ice ball in the head. (Philly has a rep, too).
It varies from community to community, but Philadelphia proper is a big sprawl of neighborhoods, ranging from high-end Center City to more reasonable parts like East Falls, Germantown, Mt. Airy and Manyunk. There is something for everyone, including very good public transportation, parks, culture, restaurants, farmers’ markets, shopping and a nice River.
Wonderful Quaker schools if you are looking for Independent day schools, and good public schools if you pick and choose carefully.
I was born, raised and still live in Philly. It is cheaper to live in Philly rather than NYC or Boston. We love South Street, Penn’s Landing, Art Museum, Pat’s Steaks, etc. Like @wundayatta said…we have a “rep”, too.
Go Phillies!!!!!
