Managers, how do you go about choosing an insurance broker?

Asked by syz (36034points) January 26th, 2011

My employees (and I) have been very unhappy with the advice and service that our insurance broker has been providing us, and it’s time to make a change. He was in place when I was hired by the company, and I’ve never gone through this process before. Any advice on making a good decision? What sort of questions should I ask? What should I look out for? Is there some sort of accreditation that I check for?

I call several agencies and let them know I’m putting my business out to bid.

Call your business neighbors, vendors or friends who own or manage businesses. I find the best people that way. I always inquire about their experience level and what kinds of insurance they specialize in. I use 2 different brokers for the various policies we need.

. @Cruiser is right. Even call your competitors. They may know someone who spcializes in your industry.

@Judi is right! I forgot my competitor did refer me to the agent we have who manages our general liability policy that was next to impossible for us to find.
