What medieval romances do you know of?
I’m interested in medieval romances – especially those that are thought of as the epitome of romance, but upon closer look are really toxic and twisted and unhealthy. So far, I really only know of Abelard and Heloise – Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyer, etc are all not medieval (though if you know of them, suggest them anyway). What ones do you know of?
*Note: I’m looking for romantic couples, not arranged marriages or power couples and what have you where romance and/or love had nothing to do with the couple’s relationship.

Tristan and Iseult would one and the love of Lancelot for Queen Guinevere in the King Arthur stories/legends would be another. Those are among the most famous but there are many.
The Lay of Bisclavret about a werewolf who is wronged by his wife and her knight lover. It’s from the 12th century.
Oh, and of course almost every story in the Canterbury Tales!

Le Morte d’Arthur – Sir Thomas Mallory
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Romance of the Rose
I had to read the Arthurian stuff and Tristam and Ysolt for my Medieval Romance class. Yes, there was one. We also had to read Chaucer and the Roman d’Eneas and some other stuff that I forgot. Gawain and the Green Knight was my favorite. That being said, look at the relationships that Aeneas had escaping Troy.
I absolutely love Tristan and Isolde. Best romance story of all time!
The story of Blodeuwedd, from the medieval Welsh cycle known as The Mabinogion. This mythology figures in a marvelous and mysterious contemporary novel called Mortal Love, by Elizabeth Hand.
