What kind of cable did you use to connect them? Unless it was HDMI (which I don’t think any mac laptops have), you will likely need an audio cable.
It has a mini HDMI. I have the adapter for that. I have an audio cable that my buddy told me to plug into the headset jack then into the audio input on the back of the TV, but no joy.
You will need to connect the MacBook’s audio out to the TV’s audio input since most mini HDMI adapters do not support audio (although some do). If you are not getting audio out of the TV, and you know the TV’s speakers work, a headset will not solve the problem.
