Why do I have so many more girl online tutoring students than boys?
I moonlight doing math tutoring for an online tutoring company. I get about 5 to 10 girl students for every boy. I am happy to help the girls in what is generally considered a guys area. I am curious though about the high ratio of girls to boys. Even if we assume that boys are better at math, and I am not convinced that is the case, it would not account for the disproportion. I have read that lately it is the boys who are struggling in school. For example, most college students are girls. I wonder if that might be a factor.

My opinion is that girls are simply more academically motivated than boys. Further, they are less likely to have a problem asking for help when they need it.
It’s kind of like that whole asking for directions thing… ;)
Girls are more amenable to the idea they need to improve. Also, I don’t think it’s as socially damaging for a girl to go get tutoring.
Boys—it’s disastrous. My son is constantly complaining that everyone knows he’s stupid because he goes for tutoring. They even tell him that he’s stupid, or so he says. If you’re a boy, it’s not cool to be schooled and I think boys fight their parents much harder on this.
You know, the “I don’t need to ask for directions” kind of thing.
The weird thing is that he’s really smart. His teachers also say this. But he hates reading because it wasn’t as easy for him to learn is it was for the girls, and thus he thinks he’s stupid no matter what we say.
That is so wrong for boys to call someone stupid for getting tutoring. Most of the kids I tutor go to the local library, where the township has paid for the tutoring. I give them a great deal of credit for taking the time and effort to get help.
