Is publishing a book worth it?

Asked by cRazelyCrazed (110points) January 28th, 2011

Well Im planning on publishing a book. I have everything ready. I am planning on publishing a book on KidsPub because I am about 13 and I’m not going to spend a fortune on publishing. The book will sell on amazon and the KidsPub website. I will get 15— 20 % of the money it sells up to. The publishing packet is $250.00. Is it worth it?

Certainly. It is a great experience and should be a lot of fun to do. I wouldn’t do it with the expectation of making money, though.

At 13 years old if you have 250.00 to spend then I would say that for the chance to get your name out there it’s totally worth it because you never know what will happen.. and even if nothing happens then sine you are only 13 you will be able to make that money back

Definitely go for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It probably won’t earn you a fortune, but it probably will turn a profit for you, particularly if you spend a bit of time on social media—not just here, but Facebook, Twitter and Myspace getting people excited about it and following you without stepping over the line into spamming.

And at the very least, you will join that rarefied club of published authors. Best of luck with it, and post here letting us know the title when it’s on Amazon. I might pick up a copy so you’ll have at least one sale. :-)

I admire people who self publish. That’s what you call putting your money where your mouth is.

This is an opportunity that most of us have thought about at one point in our lives. A friend wrote a movie script which ended up getting made with actors Lauren Holly, Faye Dunaway and Tom Skerritt. While it didn’t get released in the theatres, and Daniel didn’t get rich from its release, it was an experience of a lifetime for him.

Publishing a book will be an experience that you will learn from and never regret. Let us know when you are published so we can celebrate with you.

@cRazelyCrazed Unless you have a story that will knock the socks off editors, it’s best to float a proposal and get a publisher’;s committment before starting the effort. There is always the vanity press. It can actually work for the tiny percentage who know how to market their book. But in the vast majority of cases, it just ads insult to injury.

Good luck selling your book. I wish you had asked back when this advice might have saved a ton of work.
