Could this be gallstones or indigestion?

Asked by tan235 (877points) January 28th, 2011

I have these strange symptoms which my doctor believes is heart burn.
Sometimes after I eat (normally an hour later) I get a burning pain between my shoulder blades, I don’t really get a burning in my stomach, it’s indigestion in my throat and this pain. If i take pepso-bismol it does go away. If this were gallstones would pepso-bismol help?
My mum had gallstones and she says it sounds similar but i have a good diet.
I’m 32.. any ideas?

Sounds like acid reflux.

I have gall stones and my pain is very localised under my ribcage on my right side.

‘Heart burn’ isn’t a pain in your stomach, but in your oesophagus (the bit that leads from our throat to our stomach). We have a valve on the end of our oesophagus that leads to the stomach sack. When people get heartburn the acids get past this valve and rise up the oesophagus that leads to the mouth. It sounds like you have heartburn to me.

Pepto-Bismol would not help gallstone pain, nor do gallstones cause burning in your throat. Your doctor is probably right. Has he/she prescribed any medication for you? There are many that are effective.
