I have red, pin prick dots scattered about my body. They look to be tiny broken blood vessels. When I went to the Dr. they told me pale people freckle red dots but all my “freckles” up to about 5 years ago were brown. I heard this could be a sign of cancer but I had them run a blood test on my white count & everything came back normal. Anyone else have this problem?

I do, and I’m also a red head. My doctor seems to think something is up with my blood (too thin?), and I’ve gotten a few tests but no real diagnosis yet.

I have them in a couple places and I’m also a red head. Don’t know what it is, but I’ve never been asked about them by a doctor.

Third redhead with red spots. When I had hair and before, what is left, changed to gray.

I’m not a red head, that’s the thing. I’m a brunette. When I was pregnant with my twin girls A TON of them were all over my chest but a couple months after having the girls they disappeared besides a few that stayed. I think I might be anemic… who knows. I need to get health insurance & go get it checked out….

I have these..but I’m verrry freckly. I’ve always had them.
I had a concentration of them on my arm in a circular shape (about where we used to get our TB tests on the upper arm..for those of you who are old enough to remember the old TB tests..) that I always thought was a “birth mark” but my dermatologist says they’re just freckles, even if they’re red..and as for the coincidence that they are in a circular shape…he said they are not a birth mark..just red freckles.

From what you describe (pin prick dots) it sure doesn’t sound like broken blood vessels (mine look more like very miniature tree branches).

And, not sure if this helps..but I currently have severe anemia and see no new broken blood vessels nor do I have more or less of the red variety of freckles.
Sorry..don’t know if this helps—it’s just what I know about my red spots. ;)

Oh, one last thought—not sure if you’re currently pregnant, but while we’re pregnant the pigment in our skin can do funky things. My freckles (again, I have LOTS) got much darker / more pronounced on my face, for example.
So..perhaps these are a reaction to being pregnant?

What seemed to indicate that mine are blood related was that when the doctor applied pressure to a red spotted area, the skin blanched. That is, the red spots disappeared momentarily, which regular freckles won’t do.

By Mayo Clinic staff

Petechiae (pronounced puh-TEE-kee-ee) are pinpoint, round spots that appear on the skin as a result of bleeding under the skin. The bleeding causes the petechiae to appear red, brown or purple. Petechiae may look like a rash. Usually flat to the touch, petechiae don’t lose color (blanch) when you press on them.

Petechiae may indicate a number of conditions that can be serious. Details here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/petechiae/MY01104/DSECTION=causes

A friend of mine has them, and takes vitamin K. Because she doesn’t know the cause, K sounds about as good as any option to me, and it’s better than doing nothing, which is what some doctors will suggest.

@snowberry I must have had that “blanching” part backwards. Interesting that lupus can be a cause, as I’ve tested positive for lupus antibodies in the past, but not currently. Weird.
