Stories (meaning fiction) don’t usually have subheadings, or even headings. Articles often do, and textbook chapters usually do.
Here’s an example. Look at this article about Descartes. Scroll down.
“2. The Modern Turn” is a main heading. “a. Against Scholasticism” and “b. Descartes’ Project” are subheads (subheadings). You can see all the first- and second-level headings listed in the table of contents at the beginning. Textbook and other nonfiction book chapters commonly go down to three or four levels.
@Jeruba Ok, so I got wrong with that one but besides that, what are subheadings and headings when reading and what are some examples of those?
Did you look at the example I linked?
Headings and subheadings are like titles that divide up the sections of a piece of writing and identify the main ideas of the sections. When sections are divided up into smaller sections, those often have subheadings (“sub” meaning below or beneath). You can tell they’re not main headings because the print is smaller and often in a different style.
A list of headings and subheadings looks a lot like an outline of the article or chapter.
@Jeruba Thanks.Sorry I askes again because I didn’t see that last part of the examples before but thank you.
