This is just a research question wondering how you use Facebook, is it an impulse that you need to check and see what’s going on? what do you post and do you care what everyone sees? How about privacy? Just trying to figure out the psychology of using it. Thanks All

I myself am addicted. It’s a great way for me to connect with friends and family and I check pretty often.
Fairly often lately. I’m not impressed with FB’s privacy settings but once I figured out I could keep some anonymity with my profile, I’m enjoying connecting with some Fluther friends on a different platform.
I don’t use it at all for irl social connections because it always gets connected to the one person I don’t want seeing my internet footprint.
I check Facebook more often than I use it. From highschool events I simply check out the photos I was tagged in. The only time I use it is to say happy birthday to friends I don’t see very often. I’m careful of what I post and keep it clean and simple. Honestly some are just plain stupid about what they say and the pics they post. A friend of mine posted nude pics of herself when she was drunk..Facebook is a nice conveinant way to keep in touch when used responsibly. In plain words don’t post something that will end up biting you in the butt.
I use Facebook mainly as a means of staying in touch with friends and relatives that are far away from us. With being a military family, we have had to move a few times and all of our moves have been away from where our family is at. Facebook is a nice easy way to share pictures of what’s happening in our lives, of our son as he grows and participates in different things, and to share quick little updates (such as our son getting straight As, or something like that). There are some people I will always check to see what’s going on in their lives. I’ll go to their page and see if they’ve had any recent posts or updates.
As for privacy, all of my stuff is set so that only friends can see it and I’m pretty selective of who I add as a friend. Even with my privacy settings set to friends only, I don’t post anything I wouldn’t want anyone else to see (such as my employer) because I think even with the privacy settings, posting something on Facebook (or anywhere else on the internet) doesn’t really offer true privacy.
I check it most days, though only for a few minutes and I rarely post anything myself. Like others I am a bit wary of the privacy issues.
I started using Facebook to meet and network with people interested in the rewilding I organize. Since then it’s branched out to networking with various wilderness skills, emergency preparation, and radical political groups, as well as keeping communications open with a handful of friends and family. Also, I get a lot of news articles from the people on my list.
I use it mainly to promote my Random Ass Radio podcast.
In an unfortunate turn of events, I was recently sucked into the “ville” games as well.
be my neighbor?
@Blondesjon I read that as “vile” games. A more accurate description
I have two tabs open when I use the computer. One for Fluther and the other for Facebook. It’s fun to see what my friends and family post. Some of them will comment about the music they are listening to or a movie/television show they are watching or just watched. I like to use it to share pics, gush about the impending snow (I love snow) and yes, I play a couple of the games too.
I have also enjoyed getting to know several jellies by being friends with them on Facebook.
I check it almost every day. I would say I am pretty much addicted to crackbook. I almost never go to someone else’s profile page, except when I first friend them. When I first check facebook each day, I look at what other people have written, but basically only what is right in front of my face on my news feed, I rarely go back and read and read. I do flip between top news and most recent, but again what ever the last few are on those pages is all I really care to see.
@Blueroses . . . i know. i held out as long as i could but in the end, much like donald southerland in invasion of the body snatchers, they got me.
I check it every few days. It is my least favorite social site.
I forgot to mention that Facebook has been the place to keep in touch with jellies that rarely spend time here anymore, or that are no longer with us for whatever reason. I also check Facebook on a daily basis.
I check it on a daily basis, just to see how people are or if anyone shared links to my wall. I also use it as my main chat program, seeing as FB chat completely dominated AIM. The only bone I have to pick is that FB Chat is set up in a wonky way.
Also, I use it like an international phone book of sorts. To find old friends.
I have an account where I play games and play with about 125 online friends, including some folks from here. I use one of my an online fun name—not my real name. I have a second account for my in-person friends and family. The one with my real name I look at once at day. The other one—on and off there all day. I have lots of fun there.
I live on Facebook.
My Facebook is either open in my browser, or texting my phone… pretty much 24 hours a day. My privacy settings are intricate and selective. I play apps, too, which doesn’t help the addictive nature of the beast.
I sometimes use it to play Bejewelled Blitz.
I follow my kids mostly and a few old friends I like to say hi to now and then. I prefer Skyping though.
I’m new to Faceook.
I seriously don’t see most of the attraction. I’m on there to play games (Scrabble mostly) but also to locate people I haven’t talked to in twenty years – but that’s more idle curiosity than anything – I haven’t actually found anyone I want to reconnect with.
Not sure if that’s a reflection of my attitude towards people from my past…it might just be that the ones I want to make contact with aren’t on FB yet.
I agree with @JLeslie. I check it once or twice a day and update my status as and when I feel like it. I try not to be one of those people that has “having a cup of tea” as their status. I suppose I update it every few days when I am inspired enough to do so. I am really only interesed in most recent news on my newsfeed and, like @JLeslie, it’s very rare that I will look at someone elses profile. It’s quite rare that I add pictures Facebook though, mainly because I rarely take pics or have pictures taken of me.
Addicted to facebook! Check it constantly during the day. Mostly on my phone but do sometimes log on my laptop. I have a personal one and a promotional one for my business. Its a good way to keep in touch with friends and family and find old lost friends. Dont use my status update as twitter to keep people informed of every move I make! lol but I do post once in a while sometimes once a day.
I’ve got one more reason for using Facebook. Updates from the local news channel. We don’t get local channels with DirectTV at the moment, but thanks to Facebook I’m getting updates from the local weather forecaster concerning the blizzard headed our way. I’m a weather nut, so this is pretty cool for me.
I check it once a day at work. I’m only on for like 5–10 mins, check other people’s posts, messages and new friend requests when they come in. I rarely post anything anymore, unless I have a survey for class or something like that. I don’t find it particularly useful, just a way to find out what everybody I know is up to (those who actually use it regularly).
I’m there once or twice a day. Update status if there is something worth posting. I don’t play any games or use any of the other apps. Mostly for keeping up with friends and sharing pictures. My filter? Would I be embarrassed if my boss saw this? If the answer is yes, I don’t post it. If the answer is no, I wonder if it will interest anyone, and if the answer is yes, on it goes.
I go on a couple times a day.
I deleted my account, too many time wasters on there, I prefer this place now ;-)
