What would cause an opossum to come out of hibernation?
Today on my walk,I was suprised to see an opossum eating from a seed pile that I leave out for the birds.Aren’t they supposed to be hibernating at this time of year?

I have a nocturnal one who roams around under my deck almost every night. He must live inside a large retaining wall (dry wall). What he is eating and why he is not freezing to death is the question.
I see him when Milo gives the red alert…tail twitching, ears up, and eyes dilated.
Opossums do not go into hybrination. They are marsupials.
They also love grapes, crickets, old fruit, fish, meat etc.
(I helped rehab them. Aside of the tails which freak people out a little, they are wonderful creatures)
@gailcalled they are nearly blind. They rely on other senses so chances are you opossum is catching kitty smell in the air. :)
@gailcalled -I know where this one’s den is.I was suprised to see it!
@Dog-I had no idea they were out all year ‘round. All this time I thought they were hibernators. This is the first one I have seen in the dead of winter.Do they have their babies in Spring?
Thanks to you both for answering.:)
This just made me think I wish humans were hibernators, maybe I’d
be happily resting up instead of drawing molecular dipoles on lewis dot structures.
blehh
@boxer3 -Why not just pretend you’re asleep? XD
@boxer3 I am nothing if not helpful! :)
Wanting to whip the shit out of Punxsutawney Phil.
@Dog: Milo is inside at this time of year, but I do throw the dirty litter in the area near the opossum sitings. So there is the smell of something in the air.
@gailcalled I am sure the smell is nice. Milo could not output anything objectionable. :)
@lucillelucillelucille I am pretty sure so because that was when we would get the most orphans in. You really should see them eat grapes- it is funny. They roll them around on their tongues and then spit out the grape peel. :D
