What is the best carpet to put in a bathroom?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) February 3rd, 2011

Yes, I’m aware that it’s unusual to carpet a bathroom.
However, we live in a very old home – and there are no heating vents in or anywhere near the bathroom. We rely quite a bit on the carpet to “capture” and insulate the heat from downstairs in order to keep the bathroom warm.
Now we are looking to replace that carpet, but we’re unsure of what a good choice for a bathroom would be. Is there such a thing? Or are most carpets created equal as far as standing up against a bathroom goes?

Ewww! I can’t imagine carpeting a bathroom. It is so unsanitary.

You could install radiant flooring instead.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@marinelife not on our budget. ;)

I am sure there are carpets specifically for bathrooms.
The carpet we used on our boats was marine grade to handle moisture, but they don’t offer much in the way of style or texture. What about a bigger rug with a thick nap?
Another option is to let the cat hair build up…or maybe not XD

Well neffie if I were you I would look for some good deals on tile. It is a very bad idea to put carpet due to the fact that someone is going to miss the toilet and pee on the carpet. moisture from the shower will effect the carpet. Is your husband handy? It is not hard to install tile. You could also use vinyl flooring. You want something that will easily clean up. That’s my advice. Carpet is something I would never recommend in a bathroom. Or you could take @lucillelucillelucille advice and use marine carpet that they use on boats. I don’t know how much that cost but it’s an option.

Tile is not an option.
The bathroom has been carpeted since the day it was built, so I’m not afraid of carpet in the bathroom. We also scrub our bathroom carpet regularly with a bleach solution, so it isn’t any more difficult to keep clean than tile or vinyl, as far as that goes. My father, who has been in home improvement for almost 40 years, insists that carpet is our best bet (in our budget) if we don’t want to freeze to death in the tub. We don’t have a shower.

Perhaps I need this.

Since you don’t have a shower then you wont have a moisture problem. Maybe Carpet isn’t a bad option You only problem is avoiding the males peeing on the carpet. Tell them to make sure their aim is true! lol.

I would only put down carpet that was washable or like @ANef_is_Enuf suggests one that can be bleached. If you have boys, get a removable, washable one because their aim is rather non-specific.

Personally, I opted for a tiled floor and made sure to seal the cement board base with silicon between seams and the walls. What you do not want is water under the tile. I personally believe that a bathroom should be built and furnished as if you were going to use a fire hose to clean it.

I think carpet works, but maybe you could put down some of the marine carpet on top of the other carpet around the toilet. Our toilets tend to get a lot of condensation on humid summer days, as well as the guys missing the mark. You could change the top piece without having to do the entire carpet.

If you are replacing the wood I would certainly waterproof the subfloor to protect it from rot with some really good outdoor paint or epoxy paint and a couple good coats too! Then throw down some commercial grade carpet and some pretty accent bath rubs for outside the tub and around the toilet. Those you can throw in the washer to clean and you can get cheap at Bed Bath and beyond and Walmart.

@Cruiser good advice, thank you. :)

@ANef_is_Enuf I agree with @Cruiser . Another thing you can do is use a vinyl liner. Like a shower pan liner. I don’t think they are that expensive either.

How I love carpeted bathrooms! I had a pretty large one years ago. The little room with the toilet was in tile but the rest had thick, nylon? carpet. Nice pad underneath. We didn’t have pets then and I really loved that bath. It was octegon shaped. I can’t spell octegon tonight. The carpet ran right into the walk in closet next to the shower. now I want carpet again.

@Aster I was actually thinking about maybe tiling around the toilet. It is a large bathroom, and the toilet itself is set apart from the rest of it. We may be able to pull that off. There is a small area around the base of the toilet that is hardwood, so the carpet doesn’t actually run right up to the toilet. Maybe we can look into tile for just that little alcove.

marinelife's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf That would seem to be a better solution.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf I agree that installing tile around the toilet would be a great idea. Somebody will pee on the floor around it by mistake. The may hit the rim of the toilet and and the pee will splash and run on the floor. Don’t forget the little wax donut when you reinstall the toilet :D I alwasy joke abou that little wax donut!. lol

@ANef_is_Enuf Look into Flor, it is recyclable, 19” squares are not permanently glued to flooring, replacement in 19 ” sections, here’s their website FLOR comes in bathroom grade, garage or Living room.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Tropical_Willie wow, that’s neat! Thanks!

@ANef_is_Enuf great! It is actually a necessity to tile around the toilet. Get a nice, thick pad underneath the carpet ; you are gonna be thrilled with how elegant it looks!! I want mine carpeted now. Do it plush; get a light color. Dark won’t look fancy and you won’t be able to tell if it’s clean. I think I had beige wallpaper with coral flowers/ green leaves and the carpet was celery.
The room shape was hexagon. I think I have that right.

I have to admit that I’m a tiny bit offended by how many people have come in just to tell me not to carpet my bathroom. I’ve had a carpeted bathroom for 28 years, and I have no qualms about carpeting my bathroom again. I also have a good reason for opting for carpet, rather than tile, and I said that in the original post. Maybe this isn’t General, but “What kind of carpet should I get?” and “How do you feel about carpet in a bathroom” are two very different questions.

Having said that, thanks to everyone who put their personal preferences aside and offered me some good advice. Always appreciated.
