Could wrist/ankle weights, light - say, half a pound/pound be worn all day?

Asked by seazen (6123points) February 4th, 2011

Esthetics aside, could the soft, sand-filled half-pound wrist weights be worn around the house for hours on end? Is there some kind of health risk associated with wearing them for too long a time?

They might chafe, otherwise I think there would be no harm.

I know someone at school who wore 1 pound on each leg so she could bike home faster, it seemes to work great.

It can cause additional stress on your joints. Elbows, knees, and hips.

it’s actually probably not that good for you. Your limbs, forearms especially, move daily without resistance. A half pound really isn’t that much, but remember to multiply it by the amount of times you move that joint during a day. That’s the extra force you’ll be dealing with.

I am looking fior a medical/scientific research answer. Not opinion. This is general. Thanks.

Ask your doctor, each person’s results will vary.

P. S. General Section responses must be helpful and on topic, that doesn’t exclude opinion.

True, Yarnie – but you gotta admit that this isn’t the place for an opinion. I just need some medical facts here, for a change.

He’s my experience with them and what I’ve been told. When I had knee surgery I was told not to wear them on my ankles as they stress the joint. However, I did start wearing them on my wrists. I kept my arms slightly bent so I never had extra pull. On trips I often carry a suitcase that is >10kg and let it hang, and my elbows never popped so I figure anything less than 1 kg is ok.
I started with 250 grams and tried to wear them all day. It was exhausting but eventually I could do it. I slept great on days I wore them. I eventually built up to 750gm all day. Now I can do 500 and sleep really well. I keep my arms bent and never make a movement, (like throwing a punch), that will hyper extend the arm.
Since I live in a cold climate they are relatively easy to hide under a long sleeve shirt. The weights are wider than the shirt cuffs so it is actually the shirt that keeps them on not your wrist.
I am not a doctor and don’t play one on TV, but I say go for it. I’ve been doing it for years and like the results.

@worriedguy Thanks. I have been doing ½ pound for a few hours at a time – especially in the winter – it isn’t noticeable and it keeps me warmer… I can even fluther and do everything with them on – I barely notice them now…

Clearly, I meant “Here’s” not “He’s” . It really bugs me when I make a typo like that.

@seazen ½ pound, 250gm, is plenty to start with. Try to build up to all day with them. It is quite a challenge. It is particularly satisfying when lifting your fork to your mouth – you can say you are exercising.

I wouldn’t sweat typos. They aren’t an indication of anything. Thanks again.
