Is Tramadol a dangerous drug?

Asked by Twinkletoes22 (289points) February 9th, 2011

I got a prescription of tramadol for my wisdom teeth. I’m pretty weird about putting chemicals in my body. I want to make sure I wont experience withdrawals or anything after I stop taking it. My sister had a drug abuse problem with Oxycontin and I saw what she went through getting off of it. i never want to experience anything like that.

If you’ve been prescribed a pain medication for your wisdom teeth, you are likely to be taking the medication for only a short period of time (a few days). As long as you don’t abuse the drug, you are highly unlikely to become addicted or suffer withdrawal in those circumstances.

My dad takes that for pain. His doctor told him it is not addictive.

Even if it were a potentially addictive painkiller, you won’t have problems with addiction/withdrawal if you take it as directed for the short period of time required to recover from getting wisdom teeth removed.

I used to feel iffy about taking painkillers as well, but I’ve learned that the body heals better when it’s not in pain. Trying to be hero and suffer through the pain rather than taking the meds will actually do you more harm than good.

Thanks. My doctor prescribed them to me for two weeks. I havent actually had them removed yet because of insurance reasons, so he gave me the prescription until I get them removed which is in two weeks. I just get worried about these things ecspecially after seeing my sister suffer.

Tramadol can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer period of time or in a different way than prescribed by your doctor.

Taking more tramadol than prescribed by your doctor may cause serious side effects or death.

Call your doctor if you find that you want to take extra medication or if you notice any other unusual changes in your behavior or mood.”

No, in the short term it’s pretty safe.

I have these prescribed for severe arthritic pain honey, I’ve been getting them for over 5 years, and only take them when I need to. I have never had any withdrawal and can easily miss them, so am not addicted either. Remember to read, and follow the instructions, and you’ll be fine. You’ll only be taking them for a short time. Good luck at the dentists,

You’ll be fine as long as you take it as prescribed by the doctor
