I need a male HDMI to male USB 2.0 cable, where can I find one?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) February 13th, 2011

I’m trying to find a cable that will hook up my mother’s laptop to her tv, but I can only find HDMI to HDMI or HDMI to DisplayPort, and her computer only has 3 usb outlets and nothing else. I’ll also be happy with an adapter/converter to go in a HDMI to HDMI cable. Do you know where I could find this?

You could try Radio Shack

@Pattijo They only have one that might work, and it’s $50.

Doesn’t her laptop have a VGA port? I can’t remember the last time I saw a laptop without one.

I’ve seen a few USB display adapters, but they had extremely limited screen resolution – 640×480, or standard definition.

You mother’s laptop has three USB ports and no other ports? None? It must have something else. Well, maybe no, it doesn’t _have_to have other ports, it’s just that I’ve never seen a computer where the only ports it had were 3 USB ports. What kind of laptop is it? Make, model anything. That just seems odd to me.

@lillycoyote Technically it also has a VGA port and a mini-firewire port, it’s just that VGA really confuses her (she’s kinda the quintessential “mom” when it comes to technology)

O.K. I understand. I was trying to set some things up for my aunt over Christmas, a Wii, a router, an iPad for my cousin who has severe developmental disabilities and it was difficult. I had to give up trying to explain the basic concept of Windows folders to my aunt. She can do email, youtube, google, get the images off her digital camera but doesn’t seem to understand what happens to them after the elves have put them in the magic light box. Plus, I’m certainly in no position to judge people who get confused about stuff, no matter what it is. So the optimal thing would be to a way to use single cable, possibly connected to an adapter so it’s just a matter of plugging one end of the cable into slot A on the laptop and the other end into slot B on the TV, to keep it simple for your mom because she will be connecting and disconnecting the laptop frequently?

@lillycoyote That’s the hope.
