What job would you do purely for the enjoyment of it?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) February 13th, 2011

Because you like it. If money were not an issue, and we lived in a perfect world where you could have any job you wanted because it made you happy, what would you do?

About 25% of the projects I work on now!
Shhh, don’t tell them or they might decide to not pay me.

I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and I’ve been thinking that having discussions of Fluther is a pretty enjoyable job.

Besides that, making my own paintings, taking my own photographs and writing about stuff that interests me. That’s the selfish side of me.

I would also love to be able to work with animals (not as a vet or anything like that, because seeing animals in pain is too much for me to bear). So something like being a dog petter or a cat tummy rubber would be really great.

And if I could do something that would be helpful to our natural world like clearing trails of garbage. That would be great.

And recently (because of a thread that some of us were in) I would absolutely love to have the job of kissing Maxwell (Charles Shaughnessy) from the Nanny!

Commercial Airline Pilot. I’ve been an aviation enthusiast all my life and I love flying.

I’d love to be Jimmy Buffett’s private nurse, personal trainer, massage therapist and confidant. I’d also sway to his music on stage for free and serve as his Personal Alarm Clock. I’d go shopping with Jane as her BFF. lol
I also like the kitten tummy rubbing job; add to that puppy hugger.

I would teach high school students about social issues.

Whitewater rafting photographer and/or guide. I would be a photographer on days I felt like being a bit lazy and not want to be responsible for the lives of others.

I would like to travel and blog about it.
Also, taste tester.
Also, national geographic photographer.

I have served many terms as editor of one publication or another on a volunteer basis. In some of those jobs I don’t think you could have paid me to do it—to put up with the grind, the hassles, and sometimes the abuse. Any amount you offered would have been an insult. The only thing I’d do it for was love. There was plenty to love about it, though, and that’s what kept me coming back.

I was a disc jockey back in the early 60s. I loved that job. I have been offered a job at a community college radio station. There is no salary. It’s strictly a volunteer job. But, I will have the gratification of teaching radio techniques to the college students and that would be rewarding for me. The only holdback is being commited to the job for a year. I may not like it and then I am stuck. I have yet to make up my mind. They play only the oldies and thats my cup of tea. The station is on the internet at 88.5 Vol State Community College. WVCP-FM. Give a listen and tell me what you think.

augustlan's avatar

The one I have, for sure. Managing this community has been my most-loved job, ever. Also, artist/writer/designer.

Jeruba's avatar

I’d say go for it, @john65pennington. It sounds ideal for you! If you hate it and simply can’t stick out the year, what are they going to do, have you arrested?

john65pennington's avatar

Jeruba, That’s my girl. You made me laugh. I have always been a music nut and maybe your answer has just turned the tide for me. I love a college setting and who knows…..you might just hear old john on the internet. “Tonight is request night. Call in your request for your favorite oldie on Super Hits 88.5”

Jeruba's avatar

If there’s some little voice inside that’s whispering, “Hey, old John, you haven’t got it any more. You think you’re a college kid still? You think you won’t look ridiculous with your gray hair, hanging around a bunch of 18-year-olds? You think you might not have the energy any more?”—just IF, I say—pull the plug on that mike.

john65pennington's avatar

Jeruba, You are a buildup to a let down. That’s not the point. It’s not the kids, it’s the music. It was bred in me and will not go away. Anyway, pulling the plug will always be an option. if I do it.

Designing any kind of clothing but especially evening wear, dresses, lingerie, bridal and children’s clothing.
I design now and I love it, but to design without the stress of needing the money, to do what I want, how I want to would be pure joy!
If I couldn’t design I’d love to travel the world being a cool hunter. I’d go to music festivals, stores, museums, walk the streets just seeking out the general zeitgeist.
Third choice would be to be a photographer’s stylist. They determine accessories, jewelry, how to put the outfits together, makeup…anything that brings the whole look to life. They also sometimes book the models to be used for the photoshoot.

jca's avatar

travel writer would be number 1 (if i did not have a young child to make traveling difficult)
second choice is i would do decoupage for a living (this could only be a fantasy because i don’t think there are many people who could actually make a living from it)
interior designer – third choice – sometimes when I am visiting friends I imagine how i would redecorate or rearrange their furniture in my mind. If people paid for the items, I would gladly shop for them and redecorate, for free.

@john65pennington How could you NOT go for this opportunity? It’s not only knocking on your door, it’s breaking it down with a battering ram whilst ringing the bell.

It’s kind of like that old saying: The worst day fishing is still better than the best day working.

Answer questions on the internet and make needlepoint gifts for charity. Oh, wait, I already do that.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Hooking for hot celebrities.

Kardamom's avatar

@YARNLADY You lucky girl!

Have you read any of the novels by Sandra Dallas? I just read 2 of them, The Persian Pickle Club and Alice’s Tulips. These two particular books have quilting and stitching themes throughout that I loved. Both are American period pieces and both books involve a mystery, but there are wonderful passages describing stitching, sewing and quilting. My cousin, who does needlepoint absolutely loved them too. You might like them too : )

Kardamom's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate You mean like for Maxwell (Charles Shaughnessy) from the Nanny??? The image of him and Fran together has kept me warm all day (and last night too, heh heh) ; )

Working for animal rescue groups. I did it in the past and would love to do it again, on the scale that I did it back then…not just little puppies and kittens. We’re talking large cats and other wild animals. It was amazing and I learned something new all the time. I also learned that there are some crazy people out there that really think these animals can be pets.

@lucillelucillelucille scary, my husband said the same thing.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Kardamom Meh, he’s okay I guess, but I’d much prefer to hook for Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson (everyone shut up, I like guys who bite LOL), Viggo Mortenson, Matthew Bellamy, and my new hot guy, Theo Hutchcraft from the music group Hurts. Mmmmmmm.

Kardamom's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Those other guys are too young for me, so that’s good. I’ll take Maxwell any day! : )

aprilsimnel's avatar

@Kardamom – Viggo’s 52, and Johnny’s pretty close to 50. I daresay they’re both mature enough!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@aprilsimnel PFFT! What are you talking about? Johnny is and always will be 35! Then Kardamom can claim she is a perpetual 29! Everyone wins.

aprilsimnel's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate – Oh, you’re right, of course. Sorry. 35. Johnny and Viggo are both 35, repeat, 35! Which has the added benefit of making me 19, so there you go.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Well shit, if we’re going off that logic, I would be a minor and it would be illegal for me to “enjoy” them. So they are 52 and 47. I like older men anyway. Carry on.

Natalie Portman’s dildo.

jca's avatar

@cak: I used to rescue stray cats in my yard, I would feed them, trap them in a have-a-heart trap and then get them spayed and vaccinated thru Forgotten Felines, and then some they would find homes for and some were just too feral and we would release them back into the yard (for me to continue feeding). I would have listed that as one job I would do for free, except it was heart breaking seeing the quantity of stray cats out there in the wild, homeless, struggling, sick, hungry. I guess one answer I could have put would be to have a big piece of property and have a cat ranch for strays, except I would risk becoming “a Crazy Cat Lady.”

cak's avatar

@jca: I border on being called the crazy animal lady. It’s all good. We’re all crazy in some sort of way! :)

Kardamom's avatar

@aprilsimnel I did not realize that Johnny Depp was that old. I guess I kind of think of him as being in his late thirties. He is a handsome fellow though. But my type is older and British. Charles Shaugnessy, Patrick Stewart and Alan Rickman. How is that for a hot holy trilogy?

@jca I would love to wrangle cats on a big ol cat rescue ranch and be called a cat lady. If only we could save them all! And all the dogs and bunnies and horses and turtles too.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Anything that involved helping animals, especially dogs. I can’t say it would always be pleasant due to the amount of animals that are mistreated by humans but it would give me the most job satisfaction.

Kardamom's avatar

And for one on a lighter note: a Macaroni and Cheese recipe taster (for cookbooks and restaurants).
