Can anyone tell me about traveling by train from NY to Toronto?

Asked by johanna (895points) February 17th, 2011

I am considering going from NY to Toronto by train in a couple of weeks. Has anyone done this trip and if so: is it a nice trip?

What happens at the border, do I have to get off and walk through customs/border checks or can I remain in my seat (broken leg – the less walking the better at the moment)? If I have to get off, do I get off both on the US side when leaving the US to show my passport etc as well as on the Canadian side when entering Canada?

I think when you purchase your tickets, the trains require you to submit certain information to them and they explain the process. You obviously have to have your passport or other appropriate form of ID to cross. I’d imagine you sit on the train and the customs agents check your ID and the information you supplied when you purchased your ticket.

“Passports are checked at the US/Canadian border, there is no check-in as such in New York, Toronto or Montreal, you just need to arrive at the station in time to collect your tickets and board the train.”

I found these sites that might be helpful. It sounds like a glorious trip.

I was going to recommend Seat 61, my favourite train-travel website, so helpful and covers the globe!
