What should I wear when running in the rain?

Asked by podwarp (803points) February 17th, 2011

I’m signed up for my first 5k this weekend; although I’m excited, I’m also a little anxious because the forecast is for rain. I haven’t done any running in bad weather, so I’m not sure what the standard is. Does anyone have tips or knowledge about this?

i found this on Google.

Prevent Chafing
If you’re running long, spread Body Glide or Vaseline on parts of your body where you would normally chafe or get blisters—such as your feet, inner thighs, underarms, sports bra lines (women), and nipples (men).

Wear a Hat
A hat with a brim can be your best friend during a rainy run. It will keep the rain off your face.

Don’t Overdress
This is one the biggest mistakes runners make when heading out for a rainy run. Wearing more layers will not keep you dry. Unless you’re running with an umbrella over your head, you will definitely get wet. If you have tons of layers on, you will just be wearing more wet, heavy clothes. Dress for the temperature, as if it were a dry day.

@troubleinharlem Ah, yes. Thank you. I’m not sure how I feel about vaseline on my underarms or being in shorts in the rain, but I guess we’ll see how that goes!

Down to about 50 degrees F, I wear the same minimal running clothes rain or shine. Socks, shorts, t-shirt, shoes. Skin is waterproof, clothes are not. As @troubleinharlem notes, extra wet clothes just make you miserable.

Overheating is more a problem for me than cold, the rain feels great.

Good luck and have fun! We’re cheering for you!

Gortex. Water runs off it and it breathes. I use it for foul-weather gear while sailing.

How cold is it going to be where you live? Do you usually listen to an ipod or other mp3 player while running?

Avoid cotton clothing. Technical fabrics like polypropylene are best for wet weather, along with a ball cap or another hat with a visor. Wear lightweight acrylic or polypro socks, not cotton, because wet cotton socks are a sure source of misery.

@nikipedia High is 56 and low is 36. The run starts at 7, so I think it may still have that morning chill. As for the ipod/mp3 player: no, I don’t usually.

Thanks for the responses.

@nellybar I was thinking about that! hahaha

Well, running shoes, for starters.

You should where water resistant material. Water resistant clothing is any type of garment that is treated with some type of finish that helps to repel water.

Many types of water resistant clothing make use of artificial fibers that have an inherent ability to repel moisture. Two excellent examples are nylon and neoprene.

Well, I’m currently a track runner and I love to run in this. I wear just my compression shorts (to avoid chafing) and my track shorts (to avoid unnecessary…exposure) and I am perfectly warm, comfortable, and happy. So take what you will.
