What do I do when I just got my computer fixed and the web pages do not load.

Asked by marialisa (464points) February 17th, 2011

My laptop just got back from shop. Got a new hard drive and data re-entered. The wireless internet is connected but the web pages won’t load.

Get cross! If everything else is working, all other programs, I would think it is your internet connection that is the problem. Can you ring your provider? Do they have technical support?

If your computer runs Windows Vista or Windows 7, they may have reset all of your security settings to their defaults. You can try going through the wireless network setup wizard again. Turning off UAC should help, too.

Have you entered your WPA or WEP key for your wireless card?

If other computers work on your wireless and you are connected to your wireless router with no errors, it likely is a local setting on your machine. I, myself, would start by calling the shop and asking them. They may have set up a static IP address, put the computer on a domain, etc. while they were restoring it. I’ve also encountered viruses that can linger around even after a fresh restore of the OS that cause similar problems. I believe it was a rootkit if memory serves and those are terrible little devils. In any event, start by calling the shop. Also, you may try hooking it up wired to see if you can pull a webpage that way.

I have spent hours looking into what is wrong with wireless on this laptop.
After yet another 45 minutes of checking with QWEST internet service and making sure everything was correct, the very bright tech guy said it is a DRIVER problem.
This is what he said…“the wireless device has to be uninstalled and reinstalled with the correct drivers from factory or from Windows XP restore disks.”
Doesnt this seem to be a wrong install of O.S? I just had a hard drive and new data installed. $130.00.
Computer shop says it is an internet provider problem. Now what?

I will move to step b. from my original post. Scream loudly and throw said laptop through window. I feel for you Marialisa. I use computers all the time but as to their inner workings… I am at a loss. I hope someone here will have more useful advice for you. I do feel your pain though. Do you have that awful nervous, edgy feeling (perhaps that’s just me and my internet addiction?). :-(

@Mz_Lizzy I do my best not to pay for computer repair. I just paid 130 for a laptop that was 5 years old. It needed a new hard drive and Operating System restore with data. Now the wireless doesnt work and the computer shop guy doesnt seem to care. What good is a laptop with no wireless to connect to?
I did google the problem and will see if I need driver updates. Otherwise…the shop where it was fixed should do SOMETHING!!!
Otherwise with an ethernet cord it works great! Thanks.

What kind of wireless card do you have? Are you using a local WiFi router, or are you getting broadband (wireless anywhere) from your cellular carrier? Are there any other computers on the network?

@IchtheosaurusRex
How to find wireless card and kind?
PK5000 Qwest Communications. It does load web pages and addresses. on wireless. It is EXTREMELY slow. On ethernet cord there is no problems. My laptop works on wireless and is a newer model.
This computer used to work on wireless before it got new hard drive and new data.
I have also ran Malwarebytes and another program for problems.

Control Panel; System; Hardware; Device Manager; Network Adapters. Click the [+] to expand the branch. If you have a (!), the device isn’t working right.

What are you using to browse the Internet? Try FireFox or Chrome instead of IE, especially if you have IE8, it’s a pig.

@IchtheosaurusRex
The wireless worked before the hard drive went bad. Then it got fixed.
Now, the wireless says it is connected and says has excellant strength. But, it barely loads the pages and is like worthless without ethernet plugged into modem.
With ethernet plugged in, internet works great.
I do not have a (!). I checked.

When you click on the notification area icon for your wireless connection, can you see the packet volume? What is the connection speed it’s reporting?

marialisa's avatar

@IchtheosaurusRex
Speed is 54.0 Mbps
Packets sent is 86 and received is 29
Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
The Computer repair shop said the laptop was working on his wireless. I have another laptop that works great on my wireless.

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

Sounds like it is working. Packet volume way too low for it to be working normally. I have no idea what could be interfering with it. My only suggestion at this point is to try a USB WiFi adapter and disable the internal one.
