Does anyone want to start a fluther foreign/independent/art movie club?

Asked by Ladymia69 (6884points) February 17th, 2011

Here’s how we could do it – whoever wants to join, let me know and we’ll pick a member at random, who will pick out a movie they have not seen that looks generally interesting. The other members will rent, download, or watch online (I will help you find a source to view the movie with), and on an agreed-upon deadline, we will discuss the movie on fluther. People who are not in the club, of course, will be free to comment and discuss, as long as they are respectful.

We can modify the way we do it if needed…first, let’s see if anyone is interested!

On second thoughts I’m in !
some of my fave movies started with a negative outlook, crickets ‘n’ tumbleweed.

Aww, meany bob. I would love to say yes Mia but I am concerned my schedule would not allow it. As long as it doesn’t matter if I don’t get to watch every movie, I would be interested though. It is a good idea.

Man, I thought people would be all over this. I love the idea. I just am not always the biggest fan of indie/art films and foreign films can be hit or miss for me. I want to like them, but I often don’t. So, I’m afraid, content-wise, it’s just not my cup of tea. :\

@MissAnthrope I respect that. As far as the ones who took the trouble to tell me how uninterested they were, thanks for pissing on my party. :(

@Odysseus As far as that site you;re on, Easy A is a lot funnier and cleverer than I thought it would be. Social Network was overrated as hell. If you can find Cyrus (stars Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly) WATCH IT! It is hilarious.

I don’t only watch arty/foreign crap. I watch a lot of things…but foreign, etc. films often lend themselves more to discussion, so I wanted to see if anyone else was interested.

Hell yeah! That’s the best idea I’ve heard anyone come up with in a while. Cheers to ladymia69. Let’s get this ball rolling!

I love to talk about movies, particularly foreign and indie ones, but can’t commit to a schedule.

I really loved The King’s Speech, for example. The odd little bits of royal and anti-royal humor were wonderful. Helena B/C’s teasing about the title that the commoners should use for her was very funny.

“The first time it’s “your royal highness’ and then it’s ‘mum.’ ” Paraphrasing from memory.

@bob_ I loved Y Tu and Cinema Paradiso…will check out the others. I’m a big fan of Almodovar movies (Live Flesh, Volver), but he probably doesn’t even qualify as independent in Spain.

@gailcalled I saw the King’s Speech last weekend and was pleasantly surprised as to how human it was. I was expecting something far more stuffy.

@ladymia69 No, but he’s a foreigner in the U.S. XD

@bob_ which is why he’s super-subversive here!
