Films resembling Synecdoche, New York?
So, I recently began watching a lot of the films made by Charlie Kaufman. One in particular, Synecdoche, New York, I find extremely interesting.
I was wondering, if anyone could recommend films that are kinda the similar? And by that, I mean where there is a bit more going on that just drama/romance/comedy/etc. Where you’re actually forced to think (and learn(!)).
Thanks! :)

While the plot is nothing like “Synecdoche, New York”, Waking Life will certainly blow your mind and force you to think.
buckboy28 beat me to it on that one. Waking Life is an excellent film, as are most of Richard Linklater’s films. Another one in a similiar vein by Linklater is Slacker. Rather than list a bunch of movies, I will just name some directors that make great thought-provoking movies.
Peter Greenaway (belly of an architect)
Nicholas Roeg(walkabout, bad timing)
Ingmar Bergman
John Cassavettes(a woman under the influence)
darren aronofsky(the fountain)
sofia coppola(lost in translation)
jim jarmusch
I can’t remember the director’s name but his movies are Happiness, Storytelling, Palindromes, and a few others. His stuff is fairly similiar to Kaufman’s.
There’s a good start for you. Nothing will be exactly like Kaufman’s stuff because he truly is one of a kind. Synecdoche was one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen by the way. I remember walking around in a daze for days after watching it. All of Kaufman’s films are depressing, but that one takes the cake.
This is a great site for finding similar films. It is very accurate in finding watch-alikes.
@ buckboy28 I believe that’s Todd Solondz. He is the king of making you pity unlikable characters.
8½
Man Bites Dog
Schitzopolis
eXistenZ
Dead Man
Slipstream (another metafilm)
Oldboy (it’s just great)
I <3 Huckabees (funny and smart)
And my favorite movie of all time: Naked, by Mike Leigh
@crazykookycat I love Todd Solondz. Schizopolis nice too. And how did you get through Naked? I mean, I like unlikeable character movies and all that, but man, that one had me needing to turn it off at 15 minutes!
Naked just had me chuckling, thinking, and cringing in all the right ways. It is definitely not for everyone (that probably goes for most of my short list, haha).
I like most of the films on your short list! Speaking of Oldboy, have you seen Lady Vengeance? Those two are part of a trilogy. Lady Vengeance is just awesome.
I love the Vengeance Trilogy!
yeah, i like those films on the short list too. nobody ever knows about shizopolis. smell sign. and dead man is great too, but i love all jarmusch movies. love the slow
