Why has my cursor started jumping around when I type on my computer?
This has just started happening today. I’ll be typing, as I am now, and the cursor keeps jumping a few inches back and starts typing over what I’ve already written. It even sometimes erases what I wrote, which is really scary because I’m writing a novel, and I don’t want to inadvertently erase it. Is there any way to correct this?

Are you on a laptop? If yes, turn it off, flip it over and try tightening the small screws on the underside. There are 6–10 of them. Sometimes they work lose and the keyboard mouse will begin to wiggle. You’ll need a small Phillips + screwdriver.
Let us know how you make out.
Yes, it’s a laptop. I’ll try what you said, and thank you!! I’ll let you know if it helps.
does the laptop have a glidepad? If it does, you may be hitting it or one of the buttons for it inadvertently as you type. It happens to me all the time on my laptop.
Use a USB mouse and disable the glidepad.
The other known issue is the mouse driver. I have seen mouse drift issues because of the driver as well.
I had that happen and it was a virus. Virus scans for me didn’t work only a reinstall did. I would back up your data as a precaution and try malware and virus removal tools. Happened twice as a matter of fact and it was certain keystrokes too that trigger the curson back flip! For me it was the letter “y” and drove me F’n insane!!
P.S. You can try plugging in a keyboard and see if that will work…it did for me but lugging around a keyboard was no fun.
Ok, I literally had a screw loose in the back. I tightened it down and it seems to have fixed the problem. Who knew it would be that simple? Let’s hope this means there’s no virus. Thanks again. Wow, this is better.
There you go! You’re welcome. :-)
The other possibility is that you are accidentally hitting the “insert” key when you’ve tried to push either backspace or the delete key (because it’s right next to those) and you may be turning it on and off without realizing it. The insert key will type over what you just wrote and erase it. If you are having the problem (after you’ve checked the screws on the back) just check to make sure that you’re not pushing and setting that button. It’s a simple toggle, so you can turn it off just by pushing it again. I don’t know why they even invented that key. It’s damnable!
@Kardamom That’s what I was going to suggest. It happens to me from time to time.
