Are your pets really fussy about the food they will and will not eat?

Asked by jca (36062points) February 19th, 2011

I have three cats. I feed them canned food and hard food, average quality: not gourmet but not store brands, either. One of my cats likes only canned food. If there is only hard food out she won’t eat at all, and will cry and act deprived every time I am in the kitchen. I imagine if she gets hungry enough she will eat the hard food, but usually she acts like there’s no food out at all.

Are your pets fussy about what they eat?

Yes, my dog has decided, after eating half a 50 lb. bag of food, to pick out the chicken flavor pieces of dry dog food and leaving the rest. She makes quite a mess by spitting out the other all around her bowl. I can’t figure out why it was okay for the first 25 lbs. and now it’s not.

Cats actually can starve themselves to death in a strange way. Faced with food they don’t like, they will refuse to eat and they begin metabolizing large amounts of body fat as fuel. Processing all this fat leads to liver failure and eventual death.

You can’t just trust that they will eat when they get hungry enough.

My pets don’t get a choice so they eat what I give them rather than starve.

Terribly fussy since we give them so much of our food. ):

I feel sorry for my cats. I have 5 so they get what is on sale, and mostly Friskies and junk like that, mixed with the odd can from the health food store once in awhile. Their diet must be so bland and unexciting. I know their taste buds don’t extend as far as ours, but I would love to give them a huge hunk of freshly caught meat sometime. I think I will find a good butcher who buys humanely treated animal meat and see if they like it.

My male prefers his dry food over canned, but my female lives for her wet food at breakfast.

Both of them prefer the sliced and diced stuff with gravy and reject the pate style canned foods.

This mornings flavor was a flop. :-/
It was a pate type and they basically barely touched it.

They both share the same favorite, a lamb & rice with, yep…..lots of gravy. haha

MIlo is happy with a very high-end dry cat food. As supplements, he has a few licks of left-over soft-boiled eggs, tomato veggie or bean soups, a sneaky lap or two of skim milk when I have my back turned, and some crumbles of organic cheese.

He sneers at grated, fresh Parmesan, but loves cheddar, mozzarella and muenster.

Years ago when I lived near the beach, I used to bring my cat home fresh sardines from a bait shop once in awhile.
He went crazy over them.
Fish heads and all. haha

My dog eats her regular dogfood fine (half wet, half kibble, both organic). She prefers the wet, and will eat that first, but she usually goes back for the kibble later. But she will not take treats, unless it’s either fresh meat or cheese.

My dogs aren’t fussy at all about what they eat but my Jack Russell is quite highly strung and won’t take treats or food in a new enviroment. She obviously has to feel relaxed to eat. My Staffy, however, will eat anything, anywhere, anytime… you get the picture!

I don’t understand how my kitties can be such picky eaters when they relish licking their assholes.
