Pros and cons of skirts for men?

Asked by seazen (6123points) February 21st, 2011

Auggie inspired, ripped-off from some soda something website question, however, I am curious:

Would you guys wear a kilt/skirt?

Okay, say it had pockets?

Women, what do you think of your man in skirt?

Okay, with underwear?

If he was a Scot or it was a cultural thing it wouldn’t bother me. My man has long, skinny, fluorescent light tube white legs though, so I think he should avoid anything too short.

Benefits, air to their family jewels and a sense of freedom?
There are health benefits, testicles are not constricted.
The first two are especially true in hot climates.
My husband said, quicker access to scratch said jewels (rolling eyes here)
You can wear a kilt to most occasions. In fact, I am not sure there are occasions when you couldn’t wear say a kilt. Not sure about a skirt.
It is very individual.
With or without… whatever feels right. On a windy day, I would prefer men wore underwear.

Pros – nothing really. Unless you like people looking at your underwear.

Cons- People can see your underwear, The get snagged, They make you look like a pussy, They are for women and any man in a skirt will look very silly.

Personally I wouldn’t wear one. I have skinny white legs. In any case I spent forty years trying to make excuses NOT to wear skirts, I don’t want to start wearing them now.

On the other hand I’ve no objection to anyone else wearing one. Some men look good in kilts. But a very large percentage of society out there are Sodahead-types and they are going to laugh at you, or worse.

Would I wear a skirt? Of course not, not unless it was like play acting like in a play or goofing around. But as a regular fashion to go to the grocery store in? Never. I also find women who wear mens suits/tuxedos to look rather silly in that as well.

Pros : The sensation i’d feel when a slight breeze tickled my untethered gonads.
Cons : Any embarassment caused by the resulting erection due to the cool air rising around the balearics. Those skirts would leave very little to the imagination in such a scenario.

Ya know, I never gave it much thought until we went to the Scottish Highland Games last year and were surrounded by hard drinking, bag-pipe and drum playing, tattooed Scots. I’ll tell ya…ain’t nothing “pussy” about them blokes in kilts.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I can’t imagine my man in a skirt but, even though he isn’t Scottish, I think he would look awesome in a Kilt. To be honest, like with a lot of things, my opinion is, each to their own. I probably wouldn’t find a little floral print skirt all that attractive on a man but if he’s happy and comfortable then it doesn’t matter whether I am attracted to him.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@cprevite Ya know if I were scottish I would be wearing a kilt everyday. It’s not a skirt…it’s a kilt! :D

Could you ask this question in three months? The low for today is 5 degrees F with a 20 mph wind. Guess what con I’m thinking of?

wilma's avatar

Kilt yes, or any other traditional ethnic type skirt/dress/tunic.
Woman’s skirt, not so much.

I think kilts look great! :)

Seelix's avatar

I wouldn’t really care. I think kilts are kind of hot, actually.

The only real con I can think of is a lack of pockets. Guys usually like to have pockets for their wallets, keys, phone, that kind of thing.

Cold weather doesn’t count as a con – women usually don’t wear skirts in cold weather either!

I wore a Kilt for my Sisters wedding as her husband is a Scott and I loved it! I’m thinking of getting me a Morrocan Thobe to wear to work. Super comfy.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Skirts and dresses are a PIB, so no pros at all.

incendiary_dan's avatar

I do wear a kilt. Yes, it does have pockets. And yes, a kilt is just a skirt, deal with it. I always get comments that, hey, it actually is a very masculine garment now that I look at it.

And you have to be fucking dumb to think skirts are “made for women”. We have dangling genitals, they do not. Restrictive clothing just doesn’t make sense for us.

And you other fellas should really try it regimental sometime.

wilma's avatar

@Seelix no pockets, no problem. That is what a sporran is for.

I can’t understand why some people have all of this fear and extreme anger and veiled homo-phobia over the thought of a man wearing a kilt or a skirt or whatever you want to call it. It’s fabric, God or the President or the Universe did not come down and say that skirts are invented only for women. That’s just complete non-sense and foolishness. A skirt will not hurt anyone. A skirt won’t yell at you or hit you or scream obscenities at you. It’s just a garment that looks good on some people and not so good on other people (same with women, skirts look good on some of them and not so good on others).

wilma's avatar

Well by golly @Kardamom those were some mighty fine views!

@wilma Yes, and the research that went into it was extremely grueling (not). ; – p

@Kardamom Nobody in this thread said anything homophobic. How is it veiled homophobia if someone says a man looks silly in a dress. Nobody said a man in a kilt is a sign of homosexuality. Heck nobody said anything at all about homosexuality. Maybe you are looking a little too hard for a homophobic remark. How about saving your rant for when someone actually says something that is homophobic instead of just assuming people are homophobic without anything to back up your assumption.

Kardamom's avatar

@Mikewlf337 Because people who suffer from homo-phobia never admit to it. That’s why it’s called homo-phobia. People rant and rave about it and then say that they aren’t homophobes. It’s like the old adage, “I think he doth protest too much.” People that are not homophobes could not care less whether a man is wearing a skirt or a dress or a kilt or a dashiki or a robe.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@Kardamom you are assuming that they are homophic. Like I said, nobody said anything against homosexuals on this thread. Homosexuality wasn’t even mentioned until you brought up. Nobody even said anything against dresses for men, they only listed the negatives of wearing a dress. This question wasn’t even about approval or disapproval. You are the one who brought that nope and no one else. No one in here is even ranting except for you. You are the only one ranting. This was a friendly conversation until you started ranting on those you wrongfully labeled as homophobic.

Kardamom's avatar

@Mikewlf337 Like I said, “I think he doth protest too much.”

Mikewlf337's avatar

@Kardamom No protesting from me. Only you assuming things about people you don’t even know. By the way, that quote from Hamlet does not apply to all who protest. I however am not protesting. I am just proving you wrong.

Seeing that men have accepted women wearing pants, would women be so ungracious as to not accept men wearing skirts? Wear what you wish.
Pluses of wearing skirts: they swish prettily; they show off shapely legs; thay come off more quickly than pants; you can wear them backwards or frontwards.
Drawbacks: they are drafty; they may blow around on a windy day which may be chilly or immodest; your leg movements may be restricted if it’s a straight, below the knee style.

Some people are offended by anything that is out of the norm (compared to what they’re used to, I mean), but it seems like when it comes to gender-based norms, objections are even more common and vehement. Just an observation.

Personally, I like it when people dress in interesting ways, especially when there’s an element of gender-bending or nonconformity. Anyway, I think kilts are pretty cool, ditto for sarongs. I must say, a guy wearing a regular skirt would surprise me, but I’d still think it was pretty awesome.

Come to think of it, there was a guy in my HS who wore a skirt fairly often and it seemed pretty normal after the first time or two that I saw him. I admired him for doing what he wanted. Also, in college one of my close male friends also wore skirts sometimes, and it seemed so normal that I completely forgot about it until just now!

Skirts can be really comfy and look nice, so I say people should do what they want.

Kardamom's avatar

@Anemone Skirts are nifty aren’t they? Especially when the fellow or lady has fabulous legs.

Hope this link works. Kilts for construction workers. http://www.blakladerusa.com/catalog/workpants/glasgow_kilt/. I’ve been tempted to get one but, not brave enough yet.
Pro: Cool in the summer in NC.
“Tuck into front pockets when not in use”(Quoted from website)
“Easy access, even when kneeling or squatting”(Quoted from website.)
“pocket corners make it easy to grab screws”(Quoted from website)
Con: Worst case of plumbers cracks you’ve ever seen.
Don’t know if it’s a pro or con but “Two back pockets with bellows”

It’s hard to tell everyone’s gender here, but it seems like women are a-ok with men wearing kilts and skirts. A hundred years ago women were pushing to wear pants, and our (male-dominated) society was against it. Now women wear pants every day.

I think the bigger picture is that society, and especially men, are less threatened by fluid gender expression in women than in men. So a woman wearing pants is still feminine, but a man looks “silly” in a dress.

@Kardamom Results are still inconclusive. We need more research. :p

Mikewlf337's avatar

Men do look silly in a dress. A woman looks better in jeans than she does in a dress in my honest opinion. There is a difference between a skirt and a dress. There is a such thing as gender specific clothing. They make jeans specificly for women. Kilts are not skirts, they are kilts. Kilts are made for men.

seazen's avatar

Some have complained about men wearing kilts/skirts right now because of the cold weather – but I’ve seen women wearing skirts in the winter all the time – perhaps men should simply wear tights under the skirts as well? Oh they could be manly, camouflage or some such colour…

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Kardamom Women wear dresses and skirts usually to dress up and show off their legs. That’s also why they wear high heels. Makes their legs look longer. That’s the kind of thing men are attracted to. I don’t think women would ogle a man’s legs and nudge each other and whisper about what good looking legs they have. I don’t think it’s homophobic. It would just be strange to see a man wearing a skirt for the purpose of showing off his hairy legs! Just like it would be strange (and unattractive to me) to see a man in a plunging neckline trying to show off his chest. (Remember the 70’s people?!)

downtide's avatar

@Dutchess_III “I don’t think women would ogle a man’s legs and nudge each other and whisper about what good looking legs they have.”

Oh they do. I’ve seen this at football (soccer) matches in the UK.

Skirts are okay for men as far they are not typical women’s clothes (body shape). If it’s too cold, just wear pantyhose.
Skirts are for thousands of years a male garment, and we all know that women’s fashion was inspired by men’s skirts and dresses until first time women wore skirts in 17th century. Before only dresses were a typical garment.
Skirts don’t have a gender, so it’s good for both sexes and looks great on women and men.
