Aren't the US flags displayed behind the president in violation of the flag code?

Asked by cadetjoecool (218points) February 22nd, 2011

Often when the president is speaking you will see multiple US flags side behind him. Isn’t this in violation of flag code Section 7c?(”...No person shall display the flag of the United Nations or any other national or international flag equal, above, or in a position of superior prominence or honor to, or in place of, the flag of the United States at any place within the United States or any Territory…”)

If I’m not mistaken, that’s basically saying no one can place a flag (national or international) in a superior position to the US flag. In the picture below, there is a flag that has been placed in a superior position to the US flag (it happens to be another US flag, but still)

On that logic there is only allowed to be one US flag flying within the whole of the United States. Where should it go?

”...any other national or international flag…”

It would seem that the flags in that photo are definitely in the Spirit of the flag code. These are some straws I’d rather choose not to grasp.

I would have thought that the spirit of the code will be quite relaxed about multiple US flags.

Having said that, the fetishisation of the US flag is quite, quite bizarre.

Which one is the one that should stay?

All 50 flags at the Washington Monument are the same height, too.

American flags can be a the same height. NO OTHER FLAG MAY BE HIGHER.

@SpatzieLover The Church Pennant may be flown above the US flag when a Navy chaplain is conducting church services afloat.

@WestRiverrat Yes, this is correct….How every this question asker is wondering why the photo he’s shown above isn’t in violation of the rule.

@cadetjoecool It isn’t a violation because they are both American flags. He could have 100 behind him and it’s not a violation.

Every so often I’ll drive by a school and notice a violation—two poles same height with state flag on one and US on other. The person that raised the flags just didn’t know that the state flag must be lower than the US flag. (IMHO at least the flag is flying)
