What's traffic like leaving SF across the Bay Bridge (heading east on 580) around 5pm on a weekday?

Asked by zina (1661points) April 15th, 2008

What is the whole time span of “rush hour” there – is it better to leave at 4:30, 6:30?

(How come 511.org only has current traffic/times and not daily patterns at various times? That would be really useful.)

Awful. How far do you have to go on the 580?

just past the lake – the macarthur exit past high street

In that case, probably 30–40 minutes tops, which isn’t too bad. If you had to go far on the 580 it stays really jammed for I don’t know how long, that sucks.
I would probably just leave at 4:30, unless you want to hang out in the city.

It’s been a couple of years though.

The maze is one of the worst junctions I know. However, I make that drive every day. (My girlfriend goes to Mills [your exit].)

It’s not going to take you more than 40 minutes if you leave at 4:30, but even 4:20 or 4:25 will get you there a lot faster. I find that sometimes leaving 5 minutes sooner can shave a good 15 minutes off my journey.

mmmmmm so it’s starts getting bad around 4:30, eh? what about the other end? i might have to stay until at least 5, maybe even 6, so then it might be worth it to do some work in the city and wait, rather than sit in the car. so when does it start to clear up again?

to be honest, it’s hell for more than two hours. Around five or so the traffic is basically inert. the earlier you can leave the better.if you can find something to occupy yourself with in the city, do so. traffic might start picking up around seven.

yikes—thanks. i’m a bit surprised it goes so late….

i may just have bad luck every time. but that traffic is pretty consistently inconsistent too.
