What is your favorite old movie?

Asked by sarahjane90 (1805points) February 28th, 2011

I am looking for recommendations for some classic movies. Not so much comedy, leaning more towards the romance genre. I have watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Out of Africa, and loved those.

So, what are your favorites?

I love Cheaper By The Dozen and With Bells on Their Toes.

Paris When it Sizzles and Funny Face are my two favourite Audrey Hepburn movies, after Breakfast at Tiffany’s, of course.

Casablanca, is a movie miracle,

For comedy and romance I love Bringing Up Baby with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.

Another very romantic movie I love is Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn. William Holden and Humphrey Bogart.

The few I’ve seen: Cool Hand Luke, and Rear Window.

Look Who’s Talking is funny and sweet

Harvey was one of my favorites. It is the definition of a feel-good movie to me.
The original True Grit.
It’s a Wonderful Life, but that’s more of a Christmas movie.

Philadelphia Story and African Queen are two of my faves. Sabrina is another sweet romantic one with Audrey Hepburn, oh! and How to Steal a Million is another charming Audrey Hepburn one.
I just noticed that everything I mentioned stars a Hepburn. Hmmmmm.

I’m not much of a “classic” film fan, but I was very impressed by this one.

I Remember Mama (yep, I cry every single time, too)

The Shop Around The Corner

Little Women
Honestly, I love a ton of old flicks. Cary Grant & Hepburn (Roman Holiday), Rock Hudson & Doris Day(Pillow Talk), etc

Well, it’s getting old now, so I’d say Blazing Saddles. “He wore a blazing saddle <crack!>...”

@SpatzieLover one of my favourite scenes is when she’s out that date and her false eyelashes travels down her face and finally ends up in her drink.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@tranquilsea MINE TOO…For me it is sentimental, because my Great Aunt used to wear that type of lash, and hers would either loosen up by the end of the day, or would not be quite lines up right ;). Funny you mentioned THAT exact scene!

Casablanca
An Affair To Remember
Charade

Not really a romance but my favourite old movie is “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” The sad thing is that 60 years later the message in it is just as poignant as it was in the 50s.

Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Carey Grant. My all time favorite “old” movie.

lynfromnm's avatar

You didn’t rule out musicals, so I’ll suggest “My Fair Lady” and “Fiddler On the Roof”. Both have a lot of romance in them.

Gone With The Wind…. of course, if we’re talking real old school haha.. and it had a romantic theme

The original True Grit and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

A Fistful of Dollars, just to complete the Dollars Trilogy. And I second @GoJessGo with White Christmas.

The Bad Seed.

In terms of romantic films, my favourite has already been mentioned (It Happened One Night) but another great one is Girl Shy—one of Harold Lloyd’s best silent films. It is nothing short of adorable. My favourite film of all time, however, is Sherlock Junior.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Of those not mentioned, Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, The Philadelphia Story, The Palm Beach Story, The Lady Eve, Sullivan’s Travels, Funny Girl are all great.

My fave is probably Singing in the Rain, though.

Sorry if I repeat any movies. This thread is a bit too long to just scout out the ones I want to mention.

The Third Man
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Even Dwarfs Started Small (this one’s a bit hard to watch… but it’s worth it, imo)
The Maltese Falcon
Network (It’s not terribly old, but it’s fucking AMAZING)
Fantastic Planet
Knife In The Water
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb
The Graduate
The 400 Blows
Dawn of the Dead

And that’s all I can think of.

JmacOroni's avatar

Well, I’ll tell you my absolute favorites. That doesn’t mean that they are necessarily what you’re looking for.. but they are great movies, anyhow.
Arsenic and Old Lace
Hatari
The Seven Year Itch

lynfromnm's avatar

Not a romantic film, but my all time favorite and definitely one of the best ever – To Kill A Mockingbird

OpryLeigh's avatar

I love Show Boat

Nosferatu is probably as romantic as I’m ever gonna watch. XD
