Any suggestions for my 18th anniversary?

Asked by JLeslie (65719points) February 28th, 2011

As you might know after 15 there is no recommendations by the official wedding anniversary people until 20. Since this will be my 18th, I was thinking get something for my husband with chai on it, since 18 is so symbolic and lucky in Judaism. All I can find is necklace charms and t-shirts, I am not thrilled with either. I did some googling, but am not coming up with anything perfect or original. I will be in NYC if anyone knows a store there I should check out.

Any other ideas for 18, does not have to be based on Judaism or Hebrew, is appreciated.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ideas:
*an ipod with 18 meaningful songs-Can be engraved for the event
*Kindle with 18 meaningful books on it. (This can be personalized)

As for the Chai symbol itself, there are some nice menorahs, but no, I see no “gifty” guy options with the symbol (no nice watch——but in NYC maybe you’d have better luck)

18 years, eh? I’m thinking the best anniversary gift you can give him is, “Honey, I’m going away for a few days. Try not to have too much fun while I’m gone, ok?”

:D

Not sure where you live, but you could book a night at bed and breakfast or a hotel room in a community that is 18 miles (in either direction from your home).

You could make your own chai symbol with mosaic tiles or stones like this or this to put in your garden. All you need is a mold, some cement and some tiles, or stones.

I don’t know if you have any interest in gardening or cooking, but here is a site that sells a set of medicinal herbs with 18 seed packets. You could also go to a nursery and pick out 18 different herbs and put them into a portable raised bed.

Or you could pick out 18 seedlings and plant them somewhere (in your own yard or in a park).

What about putting together a gift basket of 18 different items, with 18 of each item:
18 photos in an album, one from each year of your marriage
A CD with 18 of your favorite songs
18 gift cards
18 car wash gift certificates
18 of his favorite cookies
18 bottles of his favorite wine
18 golf balls/tennis balls

While it seems like a big cash outlay, if you intersperse homemade things and things you would normally spend money on, you would be spending the money anyways.

Congratulations!! :)

I have a couple ideas. It may seem unoriginal, but if he likes jewelry you could get him an 18 inch chain in 18K gold. If he likes computers, you could get him something to make his computing easier or more fun. (To avoid a Code 18. of course.)

Since you’ll be in NYC, you could also take him to the restauraunt 18 in Manhattan. Bonus points that they also serve Kosher.

Have fun!

Interesting you say “my” instead of “our”

Also, according to this you can get something porcelain or with cat’s eye. I also really like @BarnacleBill‘s idea of 18 photos from each year of your marriage.

@anartist I tend to say “my” unless someone knows both my husband and I. Since we don’t know @JLeslie‘s husband (at least I don’t), I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying “my” vs. “our.”

@Taciturnu The idea of going to that restaurant called 18 is brilliant. The link doesn’t take me to it though, it took me back to the original Fluther question. Maybe mine’s not working right.

Great suggestion though!

Thanks everyone so far who has answered. I will be in NYC, but my husband won’t be. I will actually be there on our wedding anniversary, which sucks, but we will be celebrating the following weekend.

@anartist Interesting point. I think I use my because it is me talking to all of you. If I was talking to my husband I would use our. I also used our in the first paragraph of this answer because it made sense in the sentence since I mentioned my husband within the paragraph. I had an exboyfriend who used to use “my dad,” even when talking to his siblings, which I thought was odd.

@Taciturnu Maybe I can get a souvenir of some sort from the restaurant? It seems gone are the days of giving out matches for the most part though. I’ll google their website, your link is linking back to fluther.

@BarnacleBill I wouldn’t know first hand… I’m under the impression they don’t have a lot of vegan options. :)

@BarnacleBill Never heard that song before! I am definitely going to email that link to him on my anniversary.
