Why does someones Lurve score matter so much?

Asked by coffeenut (6174points) March 1st, 2011

Whenever someone reaches a certain Lurve score (10,000 or 20,000 or 30,000 ect) there is always a post congratulating them on this achievement…... And a fictional “Mansion” was created for them to move into…. Also mentioned in the “community fees” sidebar…..

Even for “low” scores they are noticed ?!? I just reached 5000 and have people messaging me “congratulating” me on this insignificant achievement…..?

Could be just me….But I really don’t understand the significance of keeping track of it….

It’s just a bit of fun.

Lol…Edit…..“Community Feed”

It makes fluther into a fun game, rather like tetris you can’t win… But it’s incentive to answer questions well and spend time on the site to score higher. Life maybe be pointless but fluther is not.

The Fluther community works by having quality standards. To improve quality you need sticks and carrots. The lurve and awards are carrots, and getting [mod]ed may represent the stick.

And why not celebrate!
Congrats for reaching 5K @coffeenut! :D

Lurve doesn’t really matter in the end, except to identify you’re devotion to this website.

@coffeenut you got it correct the first time it’s “community fee,” you now owe fluther 5k. :p

It’s just fun. Lurve doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but high scores and milestones remind us of our contribution to the site. Each jelly can only ever award 100 lurve to any other jelly, so milestones like Wundayatta and Marinelife’s 40k are like a testament to their being likable, helpful, and insightful.

I got some nice messages when I hit 5k, and I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to 10k. Why? No particular reason.
Why do we have celebrations when someone hits a milestone? Again, no particular reason other than to make that jelly feel good. I know that I say nice things in congratulation threads that I ordinarily wouldn’t think to say. On an average day, I probably won’t tell another jelly that I appreciate their humour or that their answers always make me smile, but in a celebration thread, I will.

P.S.: Congrats on 5k :)

@everephebe lol…..That’s not really true, “Answering questions well” doesn’t seem to be a factor..My top 3 answers (based on Lurve received) are sarcastic comments, led by the annoyed one in this question…. Also I did a test….one day I only answered seriously, one day I only answered sarcastically…..I received more GA on the sarcastic day lol….

@coffeenut your perimeters for what is “well” answered, differ from mine and who ever gave those great answers. I didn’t say whoever takes fluther the most seriously gets the lurve prize holiday trip to Pensacola with Dr. J.

High quality snark is rewarded here.

A great answer is a great answer. It isn’t called good answer or helpful answer, and I imagine there is a reason for that. “Quality” can be, quality of sarcasm.

So why does luvre matter so much to you? I mean if it’s so unimportant why ever ask a question about it?

It’s just fun, especially if you have a particularly unsual lurve score, like 666 or 4242 or 6969 or 11111 or something along those lines… On an old site I used to be part of, we would actually watch the scores and post screen shots of them when they were funny. (You could embed pics on that site.)

@everephebe The Lurve system doesn’t matter to me, but it does matter to others…And it’s the tracking of it and the reaction to when someone gets above a certain number who decided the increments to be celebrated? that I find interesting/confusing….

The parties have just evolved as part of the community culture around here. “It don’t mean a thing” but it adds to our fun. Like everything else on Fluther, you ae free to ignore it if you want.

everephebe's avatar

@coffeenut Who decided? Bendrew, maybe? Ask an old timer.

Threads and links that may shine some light on why the lurve.

It’s a nice little gimmick, for fun. It only has the significance you give it. Ben only has 6341 lurve points. And Andrew has 14961 points. So it’s not like lurve is the biggest of deals on Fluther.

@coffeenut lol…..That’s not really true, “Answering questions well” doesn’t seem to be a factor.

Ain’t that right. I noticed one particular user with a whole lotta lurve get 4 great answers for this well thought out reply to a question in general once, “No”.

There were other great, well written responses, but “no” gets the lurve. haha none of it makes sense

It’s fun, dammit.

These parties are a celebration of this great community. Lurve is the glue that bonds us jellies together.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

No point. I suppose sometimes it’s validating to see someone mark your answer as good but that doesn’t usually equate lurve as people max out on people.

incendiary_dan's avatar

When you get high enough, I guess it shows you were here and involved long enough without storming off. That’s gotta count for something in terms of communication skills.

incendiary_dan's avatar

And yea, lurve hasn’t always pointed to my best answers. I’ll get maybe three GA’s on something that took me two hours to write, between doing research and getting the wording just right, but my congrats to @Simone_De_Beauvoir has already made it close to one of my highest rated ones, and my one sentence response to the recent “what women want” thread is at the top. Of course, I spend my time being an expert on obscure topics.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Lurve means squat, but the milestones give us a chance to express our appreciation to the other jellies for their wisdom, humor etc. My highest GA score, 12 was “Instant coffee tastes like shit”.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@incendiary_dan shit, what does a gender non conforming queer have to do around here to be your highest rated? :)~

incendiary_dan's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Giving out free t-shirts always makes people popular. :P

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@incendiary_dan Hmm, we’ll see..I thought you crazy anarchists ran around naked all day.

wundayatta's avatar

There is no significance, so, if you don’t want that lurve there, you can give it to me. Yes. Thank you very much.

It’s mine, mine, I tell you, aaaaaaalll mine!!” AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sorry about that folks. Daloon escaped from his cage. But he’s back now. All is safe.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@wundayatta : It’s already all yours, go mug Marina if you want more…but I wouldn’t bet on the outcome of that confrontation!

wundayatta's avatar

@JilltheTooth Now marinelife and I get along very well. We’re the only two residents of an artist’s colony, and we really wish that people would hurry up and join us. There’s only so much you can say over waffles and maple syrup.

It’s all in fun for me. I send congratulatory pm’s to people when they reach 5K, 10K, 20K, 30K, etc., just for fun. I like focusing on positive things and seeing things like that (the congratulatory pm’s), brings a smile to my face, just because, so I hope it does the same for other people. :)

tranquilsea's avatar

It’s nice to know that some people appreciate your effort.

I too have noticed that you get more lurve for sarcastic and joking answers. But I joined the site to help, in some small way. I hope I am achieving that.

wundayatta's avatar

I have not found the sarcastic thing to be true. I usually do better, lurve-wise, when I offer a serious, heart felt answer. My joke replies may or may not get attention, and if they do, they get a moderate amount, usually. If my long replies are liked, they are generally well liked.

cak's avatar

Lurve is just love, that’s all. Can’t buy you a thing, but can put a smile on your face. We lurve you with one lurve point or 40k. It doesn’t really matter. :)

seazen's avatar

Lurve hurts, lurve scars, lurve wounds and mars. Any jelly not tough, nor strong enough, to take a little pain, take a little pain – lurve is like a cloud holds a lot of rain. Lurve hurts.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Hey, a little Nazareth from the Mideast. GA

seazen's avatar

It was the Everly Brothers version, actually.

But merci.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I wasn’t aware they did that first. I learned something today. I’ll have to track down their version.

seazen's avatar

Get their reunion concert (1974?).

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Thanks very much.

Man I loved that album. Very emotional.
