Help with darning a sock?
I have completely switched over to those curly light bulbs and can’t think of anything comparable to the old incandescent bulbs as a sock darning aid. Can anybody think of a similar around-the-house item to help me out, here?

A darning egg – oops, I guess if you had that, you wouldn’t be asking the question! How about a tennis ball?
I tried the tennis ball, but it’s too floofy. I need something with a smooth surface that the needle won’t catch.
One of the dog’s chew toys. Rubber or plastic ball, if you have one.
How do you dispose of the fluorescent bulbs? As I understand it, they’ve got a bit of mercury in ‘em.
Depending on the size and stretchiness of the sock, maybe a glass like an iced tea glass or a travel mug. A serving spoon or a ladle might also work.
Try a round paper weight if you have one.
Baseball bat, but I’m guessing you don’t have one. The bottom of a bottle or jar?
How about a door knob? And yes I noticed my spelling.
Shame on me, I didn’t know, so I just threw the old lightbulbs away
Thanks for the input, guys, I appreciate it.
Having a rounded end is important, so a paperweight might work, if I find one in this mess. The needle catches on anything that’s not smooth, a plastic ball might work, or a small metal ladle…
I’ll help.
Darn you, sock! Darn you and your unravellous ways! Darn you to Heck!
@Nullo : Thank you, with your help I just mildly oathed that pesky sock back to wellness! ;-)
I used a smooth river stone… it worked pretty well. (I wish I had my mom’s old darning egg!) One of those decorative marble eggs should work, if you had one, or even a plastic kid’s Easter egg.
I think Christmas ornament might just do it! I have some of the shiny plastic one’s that aren’t as delicate as their glass cousins… Thanks!
@stratman37 Depends how many of them you’ve got and the size of the hole in the sock.
