Need a new vacuum cleaner. Suggestions?

Asked by bolwerk (10352points) March 1st, 2011

I’d like something reasonably compact, yet powerful. I would prefer it not be too expensive. And I would like something that lasts.

Major targets for this purchase: cat hair and cat litter tracked out of the litter box. Until I got this bloody cat, I was doing pretty well with a mop and broom. The litter often gets between cracks in my floorboards, which makes it nearly impossible to sweep up – and it’s better not to mop clay litter anyway.

Walmart has this awesome bissel for 40 bucks that is just as good as a 200–300 dollar one in my opinion. If you don’t mind shopping at walmart. It is insane how good it is for how cheap it is.

@SuppRatings: That seems a little too big, and I don’t even live near a Wal-Mart. But if it comes to that one, I can check Target. Thanks.

I say go for a Dirt Devil that’s also around $40. It’s small and does the trick. When it breaks, you throw it out. Gone are the days of getting a vacuum repaired.

No, you need new litter. Not a new vacuum. We have this type of system and the pellets stay exactly where they are supposed to.

I know its probably out of budget, but the dyson animal can’t be beat.

@SpatzieLover: I don’t have a vacuum. I need one anyway, regardless of the litter.

@bolwerk I only gave my answer to be helpful because you included these details: Until I got this bloody cat, I was doing pretty well with a mop and broom. The litter often gets between cracks in my floorboards, which makes it nearly impossible to sweep up – and it’s better not to mop clay litter anyway. Pellets don’t get stuck in floorboards

Hoover. We just bought the Flair bagless stick and it is AWESOME. It picks up cat hair and tracked cat litter. It’s very lightweight. VERY flexible. Ordered it from Amazon and it came in two days—without using Prime or paying for 2-day shipping. It’s good on carpet and bare floor (tile, wood, lino, etc…).

It hasn’t got attachments so it’s not good for furniture, but it’s so light that it’s manageable on stairs.

It’s replacing a Dirt Devil that was larger, heavier, fancier, and basically useless—it clogged all the time and did nothing for the rugs.

@SpatzieLover: fair enough, but at this point, I’ll probably need a vacuum to get it out :-p

@bolwerk I do not envy that job…maybe a dustpan brush would help prior to vacuuming, though ;)

Soo, Bed Bath and Beyond carry two that I’ve purchased (I, too, have kitties who make quite a mess). The first one I bought was this; and it was alright – great at first – but the battery died kinda quickly… and on full charge, it wouldn’t span my 275 sq ft studio. Then I got this; and I like it so far, but I’ve only had it for about a month. The first one had a super complicated hand held vac that I could never figure out. Hair got caught in the bottom often and required cleaning (my cats are long haired). The newer one, is cool looking and has an amazing swivel head. The hand held comes off very easily and is super convenient. It doesn’t seem to be as powerful as I was hoping but I like it for sure. Also, the best thing about BB&B is that they take back stuff—even a year later! Without a receipt… so I was able to bring my old one in, literally 13 months after purchasing it, and exchange it for the new one – plus they have 20% off coupons that never expire. Awesome.

how about fixing the kitty litter box to minimise the mess…. I love Ikea hacks…. http://www.ikeahackers.net/2007/08/simple-ideas-for-cat-litter-boxes.html

Or a top entry litter box: cut a hole in the top of a large bin. ends up looking like this: http://www.clevercatinnovations.com/(S(rdjylxavino55x450relvhii))/top_entry_litterbox_order.aspx

Otherwise,, I really like Nilfisk.

Also, I purchased litter mats that lay in front of the box… they do catch some of the loose litter but kitties still always manage to get it all over.

You can’t go wrong with Dysons lol. Just amazing technology and are so powerful. Yes they can be a bit pricey – but long term use and great reliability!
