Why would the city worker need to enter my house to read the water meter when he can do that from the outside with a "scanner"?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) March 4th, 2011

Yesterday,he came to my house and asked to come in to check it.Why would he need to do that?I told him that it wasn’t a good time so he says he will be coming back today.I thought they could do that from the outside…and no,I did not ask him this.

That sounds strange. You’re sure he was a city employee?

He was driving what looked like a city vehicle…

I’d have somebody with you today when he shows up.

My 12 gauge or my mother in law?

Call your village and inquire as to why the change in protocol. Have someone home with you when he comes back just to be safe. If he doesn’t come back call the police.

The 12 guage is more friendly.

@CWW- I will :)

@A-I think you are right:)

This happened to me once before, but I can’t remember why. It could be normal. I think @CWW hit the nail on the head, I would call and ask and have someone with you when he returns.

call the water department and verify if that is standard protocol.

Even if he does come back, and even if he does appear to be legitimate, you can read the meter yourself and tell him through the door what the reading is, or tell him that they can just estimate the usage until their equipment is fixed.

When I moved to my current home in 2002, from the start (and for I don’t know how long before that) the water company had us read our own meters and send a return post card with the reading. For the past five years or so this has been done electronically from outside the house.

This happened to me once. The wire that connects to the outside meter came loose from the inside meter. I had no idea.

Lucy, grab your phone and call water works and ask for an expanation. If they are not aware of a problem at your house, do not let this person come inside. Ask that he bring his supervisor over to see you. You know and I know this may or may not be legitimate. Take caution. Let me know. john

Sometimes even with new technology everything doesn’t work always. He may have to do an actual old fashioned reading. Call the water dept and ask if they have readers in the area.

Do NOT let him in…no matter what else you do.

I’m curious to know what happened with this, if anything…

@JmacOroni -Hey there…this is what happened…I just got off the phone with them and yes, he was legit.I also found out I can make an appointment for them to come to change the meter.I guess that is what he wanted.

@lucillelucillelucille okay, glad you’re safe. But sorry that you didn’t get to kick anyone’s butt.;)
