My bike's back tire just jammed. Help!

Asked by lanahopple (455points) March 4th, 2011

I was riding my bike today, everything was working fine, but all of the sudden the back tire just jammed.
I checked it out, and it seems like the gear got stuck somehow, like maybe one of the screws got too tight. When i try to peddle, the gear nor the pedal move. When you look at the bike, the it seems as if there is a lot of extra chain (slack). I am trying to fix it right now, but I am definitely not a bike guru.
Any suggestions of what I can do? (don’t want to take it to the shop if I don’t need to)

Sounds like your chain just popped off the gear. Flip it upside down and try to push the chain back on gently while moving the pedal. If it has several gears you may want to lower your gear before trying this. Be careful not to pinch your fingers. Try using a flat head screw driver to lift the chain onto the proper gear.
Your chain should be snug. Make sure you don’t have the brakes locked on it either.
There is a chance I am wrong. Its been years since I’ve been on a bike.

Make sure your rear wheel is in its proper place. If the quick release (or the bolt) isn’t snug, the chain can pull the wheel out of place, resulting in the tire being jammed against the frame, and the chain also jamming.

You can loosen the rear wheel, move it off the stays, and then reset it with everything trued in place.

Same thing happened to me last night, I almost went out over the handlebars. The cause was a couple of spokes blew out on the back wheel. Just like that! Weird. New wheel today for $129.00 plus 5 bucks for a new brake cable.

Check if there is anything obstructing the wheel, it could be the tyre itself or the brake pads. It should free wheel otherwise. If not it is possible the bearings have gone in the wheel.

Take the back wheel off of your bike and then put it back on your bike. That should help. If not then take your bike to a professional at a bike shop for a tuneup.
