How adventuresome are you? What's your level of derring-do?

Asked by gailcalled (54647points) March 4th, 2011

I have a friend, aged 60ish, who has terrible teeth and has had so many abcesses, cavities, and infections recently that she needed all of them (teeth) removed. Due to the exorbitant cost of the work and then the new dentures, she chose to fly (by herself) to Budapest and have the work done there.

Granted, she is Belgian and speaks several languages fluently, but Hungarian is not one of them. She did save $20,000 and says that she enjoyed herself.

When it comes to saving money I am very adventurous like your friend. I will even avoid toll roads if I can just to save the cash. Back roads are more fun anyway.

well good on her. I have done many crazy things and have recently learned not to do them. I’m glad she did this and I probably wouldve too.

Not at all, anymore. Walking around the block is daunting.

In that sense, I am like your friend. If adventurous = travelling to a foreign country, then sign me up. All the so-called extreme sports I once did I now happily pass on to my kids and derive pleasure in that – I no longer need to do anything like that myself. It neither thrills nor excites me anymore.

Wow, that’s so much more adventurous than I am. I mean, I love traveling (although this love is mostly hypothetical; I really haven’t had the resources to do much dangerous travel) but traveling to have a foreign doctor I’m not really familiar with put me under, and then have no real course of action if things go wrong? Thanks, I’ll stick to sampling the local food instead…

Very, very low. I’m a chicken. BWAK!

I used to be much braver. In my younger days I feared nothing. Well, except heights, but even with that I still rode roller coasters and dove off the high dive at the pool. The older I get, the more scared I become. It’s no fun, really. Then again, that fear has probably saved my ass a time or two. Some of the things I used to do make me how I ever survived into adulthood. What was I thinking?

12 years ago I sold my business, gave away most of my belongings, packed up the rest and my dog and I moved to Australia to be with a man I had met on the internet a couple of years before. Once in Australia we moved from the sophistication of Sydney to the wilds of the Northern Territory. That was pretty adventurous. I also will try most any sport. But I don’t like amusement park rides, planes and I am pretty conservative in food tastes.

I guess I am a bit of a paradox, hehehe!

btw, gq.
