Is there a song lyric you find profound?

Asked by 6rant6 (13710points) March 5th, 2011

I’ve been thinking recently about “The Gambler” written by Don Schlitz and popularized by Kenny Rogers. I don’t think the song as a whole is special, but there’s this line:

“And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even.”

The idea that death is just breaking even – going out with what you brought in – I just have been stuck on that.

So I’m wondering if you have a line from a song that says something that you’d call profound.

If it’s got “booty” or “bitch” in it, it’s probably not what I’m looking for.

“You are the light and way that they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
With the burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence…”

I suppose that is more than one line, but that entire song is beautiful. It addresses the hypocrisy within religion, how so many people claim to believe, but they don’t live it. Yet, as an atheist, he sees the beauty in the way that his mother (who was dying of cancer at the time) was good and devout, and really lived what she believed. There is really a lot of emotion in the entire song, it is very telling of what the artist went through in losing his mother, but that part makes me want to cry. I’m sure part of it is that the particular part of the song sort of explodes right there, so it was meant to be a powerful line.

If I had to choose a single line, it would be from the same artist, and it would be “there’s no love in fear.”

But in the same old haunts I still find my friends
Mysteries not ready to reveal
The sympathies I’m ready to return”

I dunno, I always think it means that you’re true friends will be there for you, and realizing how badly you may have treated them. I think it’s about finding forgiveness, even when you think you don’t deserve it

I Am The Slime by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted
I’m obsessed and deranged
I have existed for years but very little has changed
I’m the tool of the government and industry too
For I am destined to rule and regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious but you can’t look away
I make you think I’m delicious with the stuff that I say
I’m the best that you can get
Have you guessed me yet
I’m the slime oozing out from your T.V. set
You will obey me while I lead you
With the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that I don’t need you
Don’t go for help no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
And has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

Bob Dylan’s My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my years
Rollin’ high and mighty trapped
Countless violent flaming roads
Using ideas as my map
“We’ll meet on edges soon,” said I
Proud ‘neath heated brow

Ahh, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Half wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic flanks of musketeers
Foundation deep, somehow

Ahh, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
Sisters fled by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow

Ahh, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

My guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow

Ahh, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

@JmacOroni All of Wings pt. 2 is so profound. One of my favorite songs for sure.

“I thought someone would notice, someone would say something, if I were missing. Well can’t you see me? Come on color me in, give me a black sky give me a blue rain…”- Have You Seen Me Lately by Counting Crows.

@Likeradar same here. Whenever a question about song lyrics comes up, that is the first to come to mind. It is seriously powerful, in my opinion, one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

The Moody Blues:

Men’s mighty mine-machines
Digging in the ground
Stealing rare minerals
Where they can be found
Concrete caves with iron doors
Bury it again
While a starving, frightened world
Fills the sea with grain

Frank Marino wrote a song called Stories of a Hero that touches me every time I listen to it as it is about every young man that put on a uniform to defend their country. Very fitting tribute to all servicemen. Couldn’t find lyrics just link to tunel

“We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year, running over the same old ground, what have we found, the same old fears Wish you were here” Pink Floyd,
I call this profound that resonates with goosebumps, chills, mixed emotions and memories-love this part of the song:)
