I think it has to do with puritan-based ethics, religion. I much prefer a European approach, where the censorship of nudity is more lax but gun control is much stricter.
and if you disagree with me than explain why we are the most violent of all civilized countries
I lived in Europe for two years. Never felt safer. And nudity no big deal
Because Amercia is a prude who secretly loves life’s dirty little secrets.
Unlike Europe, American sexual exploration is still in its infantile stage. It was not that long ago that we were coming out of the Victorian period where sex outside of procreation bordered on the immoral.
Challenging ethics, especially those built on Biblical foundations, are the most difficult to argue. We can easily say America is “prudish” in their approach to human sexuality but I don’t necessarily believe that is progressive thinking. That borders on the closed-minded.
In truth, we need to find a balance between self-imposed morality, general morality and religious foundations and until we do that we are either going to be oppressed sexually or be so liberated, our own wisdom will be thrown out with the Holy water.
“And while we’re on the subject of all things Canadian, I said something on Real Time that seems to have upset all those normally placid, easy-going French-speaking Canadians. While discussing the hyperreligiosity of the American electorate, I made this observation: “Australia got the convicts. Canada got the French. We got the Puritans. We’re stuck with them.”
“I was very pleased to see that you are putting French-Canadians on the same level as the Australian convicts,” writes JNR of Montreal. “But please don’t compare us to the Puritans.”
“For the record: It was a compliment, Quebec. What I meant, of course, was that Australia was lucky to get the convicts, Canada was lucky to get the French, while we got stuck with the fucking Puritans and their sex-hating, Jesus-freaking, GOP-voting descendants. In fact, I’ll prove how much I love French-speaking Canada by offering English-speaking Canada this deal: The sane people in the United States will happily trade you the Bible Belt for Quebec. We’ll take those contentious secessionist headaches off your hands, and all those bilingual street signs, if you’ll take the 22 percent of our country that still believes George W. Bush is doing a good job. You get Mike Huckabee and Gary Bauer; we get Justin Trudeau and Antoine Vermette. We get your hot, uncut boys with sexy accents from Montreal; you get our slope-shouldered, slack-jawed yokels from Mississippi. Do we have a deal?”

To keep the population rate down?
Hollister do you own guns?
I was wondering how long it would take for Bush to inevitably get mentioned in this thread.
Last week my Volkswagen Passat got a flat tire and I over-cooked my organic pasta because of that guy. Ordered the “IMPEACH BUSH” and “DROP BUSH, NOT BOMBS” bumper stickers the next day. They’re sitting next to the macintosh apple and “TOOL” decals.
Let me see I am a Cajun (ancestors thrown out of Nova Scotia for being Catholic) I voted for Bush and still would vote for him again if I could. I attend church every Sunday. I own four guns. You guys must really HATE me.
@Gooch- What do you think about the question posited?
On the gun issue we have a right to bear arms. I use mine for protection and hunting. I don’t feel comfortable watching trash on TV with my children. I wish they would censor it better. They do try to stop illegal drugs but it an uphill battle for law enforcement because drug lords make plenty of money and law enforcement doesn’t.
@Gooch, what about the nudity?
It has its place… In private… Sometimes we rent movies for the family to watch and then BOOM nudity or sex scence. This makes for an uncomfortable feeling for a father and his three teenaged daughters. Censorship could be improved.
That’s cool. I think it would be less weird if it was something we grew up with and wasn’t so taboo, but the context of the nudity is also a huge factor.
I see your point.
Maybe it is the way we are trained, almost every day of our lives. The next time you are watching TV or a movie, close your eyes every time there is a violent scene or a non-violent scene showing guns or dead bodies. The eye-closing just serves to bring to your attention how much of each show contains guns, violence or corpses.
