She was borderline obsessed with that album, and despite the fact that I had no idea how to drive a truck (or anything, for that matter), and she was screaming like a maniac and freaking out at my attempt to drive down a country road in the middle of the night… it was fun. And a good memory.

On that note, my sister and I have decided to detour to an alternative list, so I won’t be posting them here anymore.. to avoid confusion.

Day 15 – I’ve never thought of any songs that I felt were descriptive of me, but someone else did when I was 16, and asked that it be played, dedicated to me, over my high school’s radio station. It was this song. I was shocked, to say the least.

I did find out who it was. At the time, the really popular girls hated my guts at this school, and I was embarrassed by my poverty and clothes and the teachers going on about my grades, and he was the most sought after guy in school. If he could sense my insecurity, which some of the lyrics here pick up on about its subject, then he’s the most perceptive teenager I’ve ever come across. I know that he knew something about my aunt and that we would never be able to date, and we didn’t. Gee whiz, is all I can say.

I read the lyrics one day some years ago and was turned off mightily. Then I saw them at a show where they inevitably played this, and the numbers of people around me hugging and thinking that this is actually a love song was laughable.

Day 18 There’s so many songs that I love that don’t get played on the radio. I would love to hear Bible and a Beer sang by Patti Russo because not only do I love the song but I also would love to see Patti Russo get more recognition.

Day 18 – Among many, many songs, Freshmint! (the exclamation point is part of the title) by Regurgitator. I’m sure this one was played extensively on Triple J in Oz, bu not in the US, or the UK, either.

There’s so many great bands all over the world, and we don’t get exposed to each other’s music unless we purposely seek it out.

In my first year at uni in Madison, the local Z-100 type station had a morning DJ who’d gone to New Zealand for a month’s holiday. Shortly after he returned, apparently, he was told he was being let go for a younger guy and talked about it on the air.

He didn’t even finish out the week, because the next day, he brought in this single that he’d bought in Auckland, and played it all day, from, like, 6am – 4 pm. Apparently, he’d locked the door to his booth. Why the station didn’t shut off the transmitter or whatever, I don’t know, because he didn’t play any ads, just this song, over and over again. The station had to have been losing revenue, right? He was mos def gone that afternoon.

I have no idea who called them, but later, CBS Australia/New Zealand sued the station because the single was licenced for airplay only in New Zealand and Australia, not Madison, Wisconsin, so the station was in violation. How stupid is that? We all loved that song in my dorm. I had a cassette of it taped off the radio until I bought a CD at a record store in Australia years later. It’s a great pop tune.

Opting out of Day 18, too. I suck.

Day 18— I’d be happy if I could hear Old Crow Medicine Show’s Wagon Wheel (or any song from them) more often. I rarely hear them on the radio.
