Why are people so selfish?

Asked by BLITsZ (232points) March 7th, 2011

Today, my sister refused to let me see her new cell phone because she said I might drool(which I was)on it. She’s got a new iPhone 4. I really want to see it but she wouldn’t let me. Explain to me why people are so selfish?

I am sorry that your sister won’t let you try her phone, but you cannot extrapolate from her behavior to “people.”

Did you say that you were drooling? How odd.

I wished I had skipped the drooling part….but oh well….

@gailcalled I don’t think he meant literally drooling. I think he was expressing envy. I hope.

That’s not really selfish. You have no right to see the phone, and she has no obligation to show it to you.

“People” aren’t selfish.
However, siblings will usually butt heads and instigate each other and bicker over the stupidest stuff imaginable… because that’s just how things are.

How is this selfish? You were drooling and she has an expensive new toy which she understandably wants to remain drool-free. Perhaps you were being selfish by thinking you should get to handle her new phone while drooling.

Because you are immature & untrustworthy you found your sister’s response to be selfish.

Wow. Fluther is like the other parent.

@JmacOroni What other parent? Damn, have I found yet another colloquialism I’m not familiar with?

JmacOroni's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs you know, you get in trouble by one parent.. and try sneaking to the other parent to weasel out of it, but they tell you the same thing? He came on Fluther to whine about his sister not sharing her phone, and got “stop harassing your sister!” :)

@MyNewtBoobs he found not only the other parent here in Fluther..but also the Great Aunt, the Gramdma, the nosy neighbor…

@JmacOroni Ooooo. I’m with ya now, Thelma!

To be honest here, if I had a new expensive cellphone, I would have second thoughts about letting you handle it, too. Drooling?

How old are you?

You should just go get one… iphones suck anyway

How old are you and your sister? This sounds like normal young-ish sibling behavior.

Opera singers are the most selfish people, it’s all me… me…me…me…me…me with them folk :¬)

This is the “me” generation. I blame it on myspace. You’ve given a vessel to obsess over yourself, social networks. You’re subconsciously made to believe that people are interested in everything you have to say. Its all attention / approval seeking. Fluther applies, too. The entire website is asking for your opinion, where it is “valued”. You’re even given praise via great answers.

Its all to stroke your ego.

It’s hers, and she has a right to do with it what she likes.
Besides, it’s just a telephone.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@meagan Well, don’t worry, we still have tons of hugely invalidating parents to tell you that you look fat, your ears are too big, you’ll never make anything of yourself, and you’ll never get a man to make up for all the praise on MySpace.

That’s true, thanks guys. I was wrong that I was against my sister.

By the way, I am 13 and my sister is 19.
