Do you ever find that after a period of time here in Fluther you've completely misread someones screen name or mistaken their avatar?
I’ve realized my eyes fool me with some avatars (no, not just daloon’s atlas butt) and because we use the @ to address people here, I have completely misread people’s screen names to be something completely different than the actual name
hoping I’m not the only one
Do you see someone’s avatar as something it isn’t? Is there someone here that you call one thing in your head voice when you read it, but then one day noticed it was something else?

I still sometimes think of augustlan as Augustian and I still sometimes think of aprilsimnel as Aprilisme. :-p
I’ve often mistake @augustlan’s name with @austinlad’s name. And sometimes I get jonsblond mixed up with blondsjon’s (except that their responses are usually pretty male or female oriented). And every now and again (but not most of the time) I see the name Jude and Judi, but their outlooks are pretty different so not so much of a problem there. Sometimes it confuses me when I see questions from people that I have followed, but have changed their names.
@Brian1946 I do the exact same thing with augustlan’s name (!)
The only other one I can think of right off the top of my head (although I’m sure there are many if I thought about it for a while…) is anartist congratz btw on 10k. I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way by anyone: I know it’s supposed to be ‘anARTist,’ but I always read it as ‘ANartist’ and so it has this weird double-meaning, of an artist, and anarchist, in my mind…. I think it’s kinda cool.
I have very bad eyesight so this happens to me so frequently I don’t even remember individual cases.
The account is gone, but for the longest time I thought jjmah was jimah. I think that is how she spelled it, I forget now.
jamthenob!?! Sounds pretty fucking painful to these ears. Would that it were.
I get called “augustian” all the time.
I do mispronounce quite a few usernames. Even after I know what they really are, my original pronunciation persists. Oh well, I know who I mean! :p
@syz Psychocandy and I were discussing your name the other day. The way that I say it rhymes with (show) bizz. For Pyschocandy, the way that she says it, size.
@Jude Lol, I hear it as “s”, “y”, “z” – it’s my initials, so I guess I never thought about trying to pronounce it as a word.
Many times. For quite a while I thought hawaiijake was hawaiilake.
Yes, I have done that with avatars. I think they’re one thing when they’re tiny, and then one day I go to the person’s profile and see them enlarged and realize they are something completely different.
To me syz sounds like bizz .
flim flam, yes I do that one too.
Annartist.
For a long time janbb was jay nab
As for the avatars, my eyes mess those up too.
I read and don’t look at the pictures.
I thought “Augustian” for a long time too.
I didn’t get mrentropy for a long time.
Initially, I thought pdworkin was “pd workin” until he said he was Jewish.
I didn’t get that ucme was “you see me” for ages, if he is.
II thought MissAusten’s avatar was an ugly clown.
And I would say “sizz.”.
.
Add me to the “Augustian” list. OOOHHH…Duh! Thanks, @janbb. “UCME” It didn’t click until just now!
(If I’m trying to type from my mobile, @seazen turns into @seasen. I try to refrain from typing on the mobile now.)
I totally always thought everephebe’s avatar was a suit and tie! I just noticed today that it wasn’t. Seriously, look at the small version of it sometime and tell me it doesn’t look like a suit and tie. Wow!
I mess up on the avatar pics all the time because they’re so tiny and I’m on iPhone almost always.
There was a brief period of time when, after a site improvement, clicking on someone’s profile then produced a much larger pic.
But then after another bunch of changes and improvements(?) that no longer happened.
So now I’m back to being stuck with only the very tiny pics again, grumble, grumble, grumble….
:(
I can’t remember any specific examples but I have certainly misread names. I also wonder about people’s avatars…is that them? Jeruba is so beautiful :D She looks just like Cate Blanchett. I don’t even know what my avatar is? I see it as the earth sort of thing.
@Mz_Lizzy It’s jellyfish, of course.
Would like to make a general requestion to newbies. If possible, can you fill out your Profile so that people who want to know a bit about you, can?
@Buttonstc A very useful portmanteau word or a confused penguin’s typo? You decide.
oh… jellyfish… of course. Still looks sort of globey to me :-) (note to self, get new specs).
@Mz_Lizzy I always think looks like Earth, too. There’s one that reminds me of a uterus, too.
Which one is that @SpatzieLover? I think I’m glad I have the world… it looks sort of like my mental impression of gondwanaland all beautiful blue water and luscious green trees.
@Buttonstc You should still be able to see the big avatar when you go to someone’s profile. Are you still using the Fluther app for iPhone? Because that’s pretty outdated. Try the mobile version of the site: http://i.fluther.com/
@augustlan
I gave up on the Fluther App ages ago when I realized how crippled the functionality was ;)
I’ve been using the mobile version. And apart from that one period of time when they appeared larger, that was the end of it.
Sporadically, for no apparent discernible reason, an avatar here or there may appear larger when I click over to the profile, but mostly it’s just the same tiny pic.
I have no idea why the occasional larger one but it’s not worth the added time and energy to keep clicking on the profile with little result, so I just gave up trying.
During the brief time following the first change they were always consistently larger. But after a subsequent update, that as no longer the case. Doesn’t make a bit of sense to me. But then I know zero about coding.
:)
@janbb
Or perhaps an attempted neoligism ?
…...without enough traction to qualify for so lofty a term ?
:)
I would refudiate your conjecture if I could.
The only other grim possibility is that it was an attempt to Out-Palin Sarah.
But that’s hardly a goal to which I would expect any intelligent Penguin to aspire.
And if you don’t think that last sentence didn’t take any effort to avoid clumsily ending with the preposition “to” then guess again. Ha ha.
But I doubt Palin would even be cognizant of such things :)
Y’know, I can see her house from my iceberg.
But what you should worry most about is whether she can see you and your iceberg.
She’s got a big gun and is proud to brag about using it. Once she wipes out the wolves (not hard to do from the advantage of a helicopter) she might decide that Penguins make for handy target practice or a tasty snack :)
Ya just never know with someone like her…...
especially penguins who are Democrats.
